Faculty and staff volunteers at Sam Houston State University brought personal stories to life through Kats Shelf, an interactive event designed for live conversations that foster empathy and dialogue around health experiences and social challenges.
Recently held and in conjunction with the Newton Gresham Library, the project was the culmination of yearlong ACE (academic community engagement) courses in collaboration between the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Public Health.

A new scholarship endowment at Sam Houston State University will help inspire and support the next generation of civic leaders by providing financial assistance that enables students to participate in civic engagement activities, while honoring one of Texas' most influential advocates for equal rights.
Richard and Cynthia Traylor have established a $34,000 endowment fund that will provide two annual scholarships to students enrolled in the MA History and Political Studies (HIPS) program at SHSU. The scholarship is named in honor of Richard Traylor's great-aunt, Minnie Fisher Cunningham, whose lifelong dedication to public service, civic engagement, and equal rights left a lasting impact on Texas and the nation.
