This message is being sent to all Duke undergraduate, graduate and professional students:
Dear students,

Once again in May 2024, two student representatives will offer brief welcome remarks during the Duke’s 172nd commencement ceremony. One student will represent roughly 1600 undergraduates receiving their diplomas, the other will do so for the 5000 or so candidates for graduate and professional degrees. At last year’s ceremony, KB Denis, T’23, and Dylan Eiger, MD/PhD‘23, helped Duke start this new tradition.

The selection committee is now accepting nominations for student speaker. I encourage all members of the Duke community to suggest potential candidates for these two roles; graduating students are welcome to nominate their peers and themselves.

Nominations are due March 18th.  Additional details about eligibility can be found in the nomination form. The selection committee will consist of:
  • Debbie Heida, Dean of Students;
  • Dr. Candis Watts, Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education;
  • Dr. Suzanne Barbour, Vice Provost for Graduate Education;
  • Yadira Paz-Martinez, T’25, VP of Equity and Outreach for Duke Student Government;
  • Keanu Valibia, MPP/MEM’25, President of Graduate and Professional Student Government.

Go Duke,
Mary Pat McMahon
Vice Provost & Vice President for Student Affairs
