Supporting and Empowering Students

Sue and John Burk recently established scholarships to support
students in SBCC’s nursing and radiology programs.

Sue and John Burk are longtime supporters of Santa Barbara City College. Their past and ongoing support of the SBCC Foundation aims to empower all students attending our community college, fostering their aspirations, critical thinking, and work ethic. Recently, the Burks established scholarships to support students in SBCC’s radiology and nursing programs.
“It is our hope that our support will enable students to pursue their careers while developing into engaged and responsible citizens,” John Burk said. “Our most recent support of SBCC’s nursing and radiology programs has the same goals coupled with addressing the critical need for developing skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals in our communities.
“We are thrilled by the Santa Barbara community’s support for SBCC’s Measure P, which will provide funding to modernize and upgrade college facilities. With the leadership of SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Erika Endrijonas, we look forward to a fresh approach in moving the college forward and hope to assist in that.”

Discovering a Career Path in Early Childhood Education

Tony Morris, Charles Cook, and Devona Hawkins

“While I originally planned to study biochemistry at SBCC, a course in early childhood development taught by Helen (‘Winkie’) Cooper changed the path of my education and career,” Charles Cook said when asked about his favorite classes at Santa Barbara City College. “I pivoted and got an associate degree in Early Childhood Education in spring 2024, as well as an associate child care teaching certificate.”
Charles speaks highly of his professors at SBCC. “They sharpened my learning skills and cultivated excellence in their students through helpful feedback and expert guidance,” he said, adding that Professor Devona Hawkins nominated him for a scholarship.
“I feel fortunate to have attended SBCC, and also incredibly honored to have received a scholarship from the Rotary Club of Montecito in partnership with the SBCC Foundation. The funding not only helped with my university tuition, but provided encouragement and a belief in the importance of my work that motivates me to this day.”
Charles is now pursuing his bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Cruz, and plans to earn a graduate degree in social work and eventually work as a children’s therapist. Thanks to his SBCC education, he discovered his career path and has a solid foundation to pursue his goals.

in the Radiologic Technology Program
|
SBCC student Sarah-Joy Stevens received a scholarship last year from the Rotary Club of Montecito in partnership with the SBCC Foundation, and she is looking forward to graduating later this year with an Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology.
Q&A With Sarah-Joy:
What are you planning to do after you graduate from SBCC?
After I pass the national board exam, I am planning to work at a hospital as an x-ray tech and to further my education and career. I’d also like to pursue other modalities, such as CT, MRI, and Interventional Radiology.
How did the scholarship you received from the Rotary Club help you in pursuing your educational goals?
I would like to thank the Rotary Club again for the scholarship. The Radiology program is a 2-year, full-time commitment. The full-time class work combined with 1,500 hours of required clinical learning in the hospital can be very difficult to do and balance. Many of us have to work jobs outside the program to support ourselves financially. The scholarship is greatly appreciated and makes a big difference.
What would you like people to know about SBCC, your educational and career journey, and goals for the future?
SBCC has been an amazing school for me and I will miss being on the beautiful campus. The Radiology program is often overlooked, and many people do not realize that it offers amazing career opportunities in health care. My goal is to further my career in the hospital, and to always help patients feel better whenever they are in my care. I also hope to share with other students
the amazing career options in radiology, and show that we have a major impact in the health care arena.
