Jonah 4:9-10
But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”  But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.   And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
New International Version (NIV)
Why should we care about people from other countries?  It is true we have plenty of problems to solve in our own.  Still it seems like many in our world want to get here.  Why should we care?

Why did God care about Nineveh?  He sent Jonah to preach to them.  When Jonah refused, God sent a storm and a whale to change his mind.  When Jonah went and preached there was an historic revival in the city of Nineveh.  Everyone converted.  Jonah said, “I knew it.  You are way too nice God.”  So God sent him a plant to shade his head from the sun.  And a worm to kill the plant.  Then God said, “You care more about a plant and your own comfort than you do about 120,000 lost souls.  Shouldn’t I care about Nineveh?

Part of our growth in Christ, maybe most of it, is God realigning our hearts with his.  Scientists say that we have a love hormone which makes us love people . . . but only the ones just like us.  God offers another gift to those who follow his Son.   We get the Spirit of God who so loved the world that he gave his only Son.  As Jonah learned, God is inescapable on this matter.  I must love all the people God loves.  I get to.  The time is now.

 Pray with me:
Father, enlarge our hearts today so that we may love all the people you love.  What would you have us do about the hurting, lost people in the world?  Please show us and then empower us to do it.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
