1 Corinthians 1:1-3
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:   Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
New International Version (NIV)
Have you found your calling?  Growing up among Christians, I heard the word “called” as a prerogative of the few who had entered vocational ministry.  Preachers, music ministers, education ministers, youth ministers, children’s and preschool and recreation ministers were called by God.  As a boy I wondered, “How did they hear God’s call?  Was his voice audible?  Did  it echo?”
Ever after Paul saw the blinding light on the road to Damascus, he never doubted that God had called him to be an apostle and to preach the gospel.  But Paul did not see himself in a uniquely mysterious category.  In his mind all Christians are called by God to be his holy people because we call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God does not call the equipped.  On the road to Damascus, Paul was ill-equipped to be a Kingdom evangelist.  He was fighting the cause of Christ.  But through the body of Christ, God equipped Paul whom he had called.  Paul not only heard God’s call, but he answered it.  Have we?
Pray with me:
Father, sweetly we have heard you calling, “Come, follow me.”   Lord, make us the kind of people who always take your call.  Let us not take it lightly!  Today if we hear your voice, help us not to harden our hearts.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
