Acts 7: 11-16
11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food. 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit. 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family. 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all. 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died. 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money."

New International Version (NIV)
“Make sure that the same God who called you here is calling you away.” Virtus Gideon spoke those words in a New Testament class in seminary. I listened to him. Those words confirmed what I had learned in the scriptures:  God himself directs our steps. We can trust him to reveal what we need to know. From time to time a church invited me and our family to move. But I could only go if I knew that God was calling me away.

Jacob’s family was not exempt from the suffering caused by the great famine. Egypt had food because Joseph had prepared for the famine in the seven good years. His interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream not only saved his life, but the lives of his family members. God who had placed Jacob in the land now called him to leave Israel and go to Egypt. He obeyed. His sons buried him. Joseph died in Egypt, but his bones were carried out with Israel when they crossed into the promised land.

Where has God put you? No matter if you would have chosen this place. Believe that God is directing your steps. If God placed you where you are, he can get you out. Sometimes we calculate without God and lament the things which have put us where we are. Dallas Willard said, “God has never helped anyone in any place except where they are.” Truth! Joseph worked in Egypt while his father was back in Israel. But God found a way. He always does. We sing, “Waymaker, miracle Worker, Light in the darkness . . .You are!”

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you that you know our names, our needs, and our location. Today, where we are, we ask you to make your powerful presence known. Take us where you want us to be. Lead us out in your timing. All that we have learned about you in your word makes us trust you today for all the things we do not understand. We will go where you send us today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
