Week of March 20, 2016: First Day of Spring!

Health and Wellness at St M
Research has shown that the academic success of students is strongly linked to their health, with healthier students being better learners. Students who are more physically active, get adequate sleep and consume a balanced diet perform better in school than those who do not. Here are a few fun facts:
  • Students who eat breakfast have better attention and memory.
  • According to a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center research study, results indicate that higher math scores were related to greater sleep quality, less awakenings and increased sleep efficiency
  • After just 20 minutes of physical activity, brain activity improves.
  • Aerobic exercise is great for body and brain. Not only does it improve brain function, but it also acts as a “first aid kit” on damaged brain cells.
On Friday, our Middle Schoolers participated in a Wellness Day exploring the topics of Healthy Sleep Habits, Mindfulness and Relaxation, Healthy Snacks and Nutrition and Cyber Bullying and Cyber Safety. Special thanks to organizer Katherine Martin and to our speakers:
  • Dr. Niam Basir (Bon Secours Sleep Disorder Clinic)
  • Jenny Courain (Mindfulness and Yoga Coach)
  • Laura Godwin (VAIS/Nutrition specialist)
  • Georgia Smith, (Crime Prevention Specialist, Chesterfield County Police Department)
Thank you as well to everyone who joined us this week for our "Meetings with Michael" on the topic nutrition and school lunch.  Nutritionist Donna Wheeler from ACAC gave many helpful tips on how to encourage healthy eating habits at home and at school.
As a follow-up to these discussions, we invite our families to complete the following survey on our school lunch program. We are exploring options to improve our lunch offerings to make them more nutritious. We welcome community feedback.

Faculty News
We would like to share with you that a beloved member of our Middle School faculty, Cheryl Broga, will be leaving at the end of the School year. In her words, she is transitioning from middle years education to "early years education one-on-one" with her new granddaughter, Addie.
Mrs. Broga has left an indelible mark on St. Michael's and our love and best wishes go with her as she begins her next adventure outside of our School walls. She shared that she is going to miss most our special community and all of the St M children who have touched her heart and made her smile and laugh.
In the days ahead, please join the School in thanking her for all of her contributions to St. Michael's.
Mrs. Broga, always remember... Once a Dragon, always a Dragon!
Magic Dragon Day – Calling all Blue & White Backers!
Thank you to those families and businesses that have already generously committed to being a Backer for Magic Dragon Day! Backers are vital to the success of Magic Dragon Day, as they offset the cost of the event and increase the amount that the SMPA provides to the school!

If you have been thinking about being a Backer, please act today!   These are due by this Friday, March 25.  Download a copy of the form here.

Middle School Chapel Communion
On Thursday, March 24th at 1:05 pm, the Middle School Chapel will include an abbreviated service of Holy Communion, led by Rev. Jeunée with the help and creativity of the Chapel Committee members and leaders, in commemoration of Maundy Thursday.
Maundy Thursday is the day Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with the disciples. Families are invited to attend.  For students who are interested, Rev. Jeunée will lead a brief time of instruction and discussion around the meaning of the Eucharist at lunch at 11:15 a.m. on Monday in the conference room.
Of course, receiving communion is completely voluntary, so take the time to talk with your child about your family's beliefs. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians, no matter age or denomination, are welcome at the Lord’s Table, and St. Michael’s Church invites anyone who desires to draw closer to God to receive the bread and wine (or in our case Thursday – grape juice) of communion. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Rev. Jeunée at 272-0992, x 108.
