Annual Meeting Recognizes the Impact of Many
Tennessee CASA’s Annual Meeting was held on the morning of September 25, 2013, in Nashville at The Mad Platter Restaurant. Although the weather was gloomy, the atmosphere inside was nothing but uplifting. TN CASA Executive Director, Cheryl Hultman and TN CASA Board President, Kevin Balkwill kicked off the event with a warm welcome to all guests and honorees.
DCS Commissioner Henry thanks CASA for its work in striving for permanance for children who have been abused and neglected.

Keynote speaker, DCS Commissioner Jim Henry went on to share his vision for the department and noted some of the great strides Tennessee is making in children’s health, safety and permanency. “Tennessee is one of the top states in the country on getting youth back on track to permanency”, he stated.  Although Commissioner Henry has only been in his position for about 5 months he feels, “it has been a blessing being able to turn things around”. Coming to a close, he thanked all of the attendees for the work that they do stating, “You’re really making a difference in a child’s life.”

Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency’s CASA Program Director, Judy Greenwood had the honor of presenting the “Champion for Children” award to District Attorney General Randy York of the 13th Judicial District. General York is the first District Attorney in Tennessee to use the state law of allowing the seizure of assets following conviction for a sex crime against minors, where funds from the assets seized go to child abuse prevention agencies such as CASA. After accepting his award, General York indicated there are so many cases of child abuse and neglect and he is so thankful to have CASA programs in his district.  Judy expressed sincere appreciation for General York and his work saying, “It is a struggle with words [to describe the impact of the funds]… they have given a breath of life into the program.”

TN CASA’s past-board president, Meagan Frazier Grosvenor presented the award for TN CASA “Advocate of the Year” to Stacey Shrader Joslin, Young Lawyers Division Director & Media Relations Coordinator for the Tennessee Bar Association. Stacey has been diligent and timely in publicizing CASA-related articles of interest as much as she can in the daily publication, TBA Today. Her on-going publicity helps TN CASA access an audience not typically reached.  She expressed her appreciation for the recognition stating, “I like to highlight CASA in the newsletter to reach a big demographic.”

Tawny Spinelli's message both encourages and inspires others in their child advocacy work.
As the Annual Meeting came to a close, TN CASA Board Member and former foster youth, Tawny Spinelli shared her story of how CASA came into her life.  Being involved in a youth “success” council in her early college years, she was able to hear the life stories of the other youth serving on the council.  Amazed by her peers’ success, she found the common factor in each of their stories was that they had a CASA advocating for them. Soon enough, her initial question of “Why didn’t I have a CASA?” turned into “Why doesn’t every child have a CASA?” Tawny now serves as the Children’s Cabinet Assistant Director and TN Young Child Wellness Coordinator.
Local CASA directors from across the state convened for a day and a half long retreat following the Annual Meeting. Presentations were given by Pat Wade and Linda O'Neal with the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth, Tawny Spinelli with the TN Children's Cabinet, DCS Director of Independent Living Michael Leach, and Jane Andrews, Executive Director of CASA of Davidson County.
On Thursday, September 19, Mrs. Pat Henry, wife of Jim Henry Commissioner of the Department of Children's Services, made a visit to CASA of Davidson County. She joined a group of about 25 volunteers, staff and board members to share some of her own family story and about the importance of understanding children with disabilities and youth with addictions.
