Film at Mason Scholarships

As you begin thinking about your upcoming semester and developing your projects, you might consider applying for a Film at Mason Tuition Scholarship.  We are offering $1500-$3000 scholarships to 5 students next year. Meet Your New Advisor

Welcome Madeline Portnoy

Madeline Portnoy (she/her) is the Academic Advisor and Admissions Coordinator for the Film and Video Studies program at Mason. She graduated from George Mason University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, Law, and Society, and a minor in Atmospheric Science.  Outside of her Film and Video Studies responsibilities, Maddie has academic interests in religion, culture and media, and food anthropology. 

Madeline’s office is located in College Hall C110, down the hall from the Film at Mason office. Be sure to stop by and say hello. To schedule an academic advising appointment, you may book with her through Navigate Mason.

Madeline will be available for appointments on campus Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-4pm and virtually Mondays-Thursdays 9am-4pm. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to her at mportnoy@gmu.edu.  

Winter Warm-Up and Production Fair 

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Winter Warm-Up and Production Fair. For those of you who are searching for cast and crew for your films, be sure to look at the interest sheets hanging up in the Jason Cortez Creativity Lab in DeLaski Performing Arts Building, PAB 3019. Visiting Filmmakers Series


This spring, the Visiting Filmmakers Series is once again bringing a diverse and exciting group of filmmakers to campus, with their documentaries and narrative feature films. Please see the lineup below and be sure to mark your calendars.

Mason Media, Arts, Design, and Communication Career Fair 

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

The expo-style event will be held in the lobby of the Center for the Arts and will be attended by approximately 250 students and alumni from Mason’s creative disciplines interested in both internship and employment opportunities.

Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

Summer Applications

The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP) is designed to give undergraduates an authentic research, creative, or scholarly experience under the guidance of a mentor.       
Students may receive financial support and/or academic credit for their projects, in addition to developing relevant academic and professional skills. In the past, many of our Film at Mason students have applied to the program and received funding for their film projects.

Faculty Achievement

Professor Tommy Britt's latest writing on filmmaker David Lynch, "David Lynch’s Desert Frontier: Road Movie, Desert Horror and Western Liminality," was published in the new book David Lynch and the American West: Essays on Regionalism and Indigeneity in Twin Peaks and the Films. 


Professor Peter Kimball’s "Millstone" won the Unstoppable Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance last month.
Entirely in American Sign Language and featuring an all-Deaf cast, "Millstone" is is a dark, emotional thriller about a desperate, grieving couple who are looking for a therapist to cure them of their grief.

2023 Alumni Association Awards

Nominations are open for the 2023 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards. For more than 30 years, the Alumni Association has recognized outstanding alumni, student, and faculty accomplishments with these five annual awards:

Senior of the Year 
Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award
