Welcome (back) Silver! We, the Office of Career & Professional Development (CPD), are thrilled to offer you another academic year filled with opportunities to explore possibilities, foster connections, and support your placement preparation and social work readiness.

To demonstrate how you can plug into what CPD has to offer throughout your Silver student experience, we will be guiding you through a previous student’s real-life engagement with our office.

Supporting Sejal’s Social Work Readiness & Career Design Journey: Year One Experience

SEPTEMBER: Attends “Silver Connect: PowerPoint Party” event to build connections with peers, staff, and faculty at Silver (upcoming Silver Connect event: Fall Welcome Mixer on 9/27)
OCTOBER: CPD visits Sejal’s Practice I class to give a skills-based workshop on elevator pitches and resume development for second-year placement preparation
OCTOBER: Attends “Silver Success Series: Forensic and Criminal Justice Social Work” alum panel to explore pathways (upcoming Silver Success Series: The PhD & DSW Pathway in Social Work on 10/2 and Medical & Hospital Social Work on 12/1)
NOVEMBER: Attends “Changemaking in Social Work: Upstander 101” training to learn bystander intervention strategies (upcoming Changemaking in Social Work event: Preventing Burnout and Reimagining Care on 10/5)
JANUARY: Makes a 15-minute speed resume review appointment to get feedback on her resume before she submits it for second-year placement
MARCH: Sejal completes a virtual interview module exercise in preparation for CPD’s visit to her Practice II class where they will give a skills-based workshop on interview strategies for second-year placement preparation

Supporting Sejal’s Social Work Readiness & Career Design Journey: Year Two Experience

NOVEMBER: CPD visits Sejal’s Practice III class to discuss networking, preparing for the job search, and an introduction to the licensing application process
JANUARY: Makes a 1:1 career coaching appointment to discuss job search strategies and gets connected to virtual resources such as the “How to Apply for New York State Education Department School Social Worker Certification” guide
FEBRUARY: Attends a “Wasserman@Silver: Preparing for the Job Search in Social Work” event
MARCH: Attends the annual social work career fair with 140+ employers and gets three interviews with agencies of interest
APRIL: CPD visits Sejal’s Practice IV class to discuss job searching, evaluating offers, and salary negotiation

APRIL: Attends “Wasserman@Silver: Salary Negotiation for Social Workers” event to get guidance on how to advocate for higher pay
JUNE: Post-graduation, makes an appointment as an alum to discuss how to evaluate job offers

The Office of Career & Professional Development strives to prepare the best-career ready social workers in the profession by providing personalized, inclusive, and student-centered resources, tools, and programs.

Moreover, to support students in their social work readiness and career design, we partner with faculty, alumni, and other departments to strategically integrate social work competencies and core values into all aspects of the Silver student experience and their preparation for social work practice.
