Enough is enough. Sometimes God says, “Enough is enough.” In the first book of the Bible, the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah rose to his attention and he decided to stop the madness. So, he sent angels to bring judgment to the city. Remember Abraham pleaded for God not to destroy the city, because he hoped to save the life of his nephew Lot. When the angels arrived and saw the wickedness of the city, they told Lot and his family to leave the city. Lot’s family had become so comfortable it was hard to leave.
In the final book of the Bible, God brings judgment on ancient Rome. He tells his people to come out of the city so that they do not share in her sins. We must never become comfortable with the sins of the culture around us. If God’s people go along to get along, we will find ourselves caught up in the judgment of God upon a sinful world.
It is popular in theological circles to discount God’s ultimate judgment on sin. One of my young preacher friends told me he no longer believes in hell. I responded, “But Jesus believes in hell. The New Testament teaches about it. And the people in hell will all believe in hell.” He said he would reconsider that thought.
God will judge sin in the end. If we turn from sin and run to Jesus who paid for our sins, we will not be judged. As the angel said to Lot, and the angel says in our passage today, “Come out from among them” and be holy. This is no time to compromise with sin. Jesus paid too high a price for us to tell people that sin is really not that bad. Enough is enough.
