Mothering Our Mothers

By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
Motherhood is an incredibly rewarding experience for women. It has the potential to enrich our lives, build deep connections, and help us develop multi-faceted skills. However, in our culture, motherhood can also be a time of increased social isolation and stress.
Many women come to birth and breastfeeding with a history of depression, anxiety, or PTSD, the result of escalating rates of abuse and trauma. Instead of wiping the slate clean, the stress of motherhood has the potential to aggravate many mood disorders.
If a mother is having difficulty sleeping, or is depressed, we like to identify breastfeeding as the culprit, and rather than provide extra support, we tend to “throw the baby out with the bath water."

Women Who Really Care

MilkWorks is honored to be the recipient of a generous donation from the membership of 100s of Women Who Care Lincoln, a local philanthropic group supporting non-profits in our community. Thank you to all the women who made this donation possible and who care about the difference that MilkWorks makes in our community.

It's All About Community

MilkWorks is a home-grown Nebraska non-profit and we love being part of Lincoln and Omaha! We encourage you to support MilkWorks (and all the other fantastic local non-profits) on Give to Lincoln Day (Wednesday May 18th), and Omaha Gives (Wednesday May 24th). For your convenience, you can schedule your donation now for either event and it will count towards the matching funds. We rely upon these events to fund our education and support services that are provided FREE in our communities for ALL families. Thank you for partnering with us!

Welcome Emily!

MilkWorks recently welcomed Emily Suing to our board of directors. Emily, who is the owner of Starstruck Dance Academy and the branch manager at Great Western Bank, realized the value of a community breastfeeding center when her son was born. She decided to offer her time to our board of directors in order to give back to an organization that was so helpful during a crucial time in her life. According to Emily, "I value what MilkWorks does for our community and I want breastfeeding support to remain a resource for ALL moms."
Thank you, Emily, and welcome to our board!

Milk Donation and Outreach Center - Now Open in Lincoln!

Yes, MilkWorks (Lincoln) is now a Donation and Outreach Center (aka Milk Depot) for the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Denver! We cut the ribbon on April 14th, which means local moms can now apply to be a milk donor.

As a milk donor, once you have been approved and screened, you can bring your valuable donated milk to MilkWorks (Lincoln) and we will send it safely to Colorado to be pasteurized and bottled. Thank you to Alex, one of our Lincoln Breastfeeding Educators, for being our very first donor!

Pediatric experts recommend that all premature infants receive banked milk if their mother's milk is not available. Nine million ounces of banked milk are needed to meet the needs of premature infants born in the US. If you make extra milk that your baby does not need, please consider donating it to a milk bank.
