Take a walk on the wild side|Mountain Lions
By Bob Anderson, Master Naturalist for the Forest Conservancy
In RVR, there are occasional sightings of mountain lions, also known as cougars. Colorado has a very healthy population of cougars. They are most active in the evening and morning. They “see us before we see them”.
Signs of evidence:
1.
Tracks are fairly large(3-3 1/2 inches wide with usually no evidence of claw marks (claws are retractable).
2. Partially eaten and partially buried prey.
3. Scat is tubular(1-1 1/2 inches in diameter), segmented like a tootsie roll, pinched off at the ends, and often has remnants (furry) of what it has eaten.
Diet: primarily deer and elk but will enjoy any mammal including domestic animals.
Mountain lions rarely attack people. Below are recommended actions you should take if you are so lucky to encounter a mountain lion (as suggested by the forest service):
Hiking and camping in mountain lion habitat
  • Do not hike alone. Go in groups, with adults supervising children.
  • Avoid dawn and dusk excursions.
  • Keep children close to you. Animals seem especially drawn to children.
  • Pick up small children. The mountain lion will see small children as easier prey.
  • Do not approach a lion. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation, so give them a way to escape.
  • Do not run from a lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lion's instinct to chase.
  • Do not crouch down or bend over. A human standing does not resemble a mountain lion's natural prey.
  • Do all you can to appear larger. Raise your arms. Open your jacket if you are wearing one. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a loud voice.
  • Fight back if attacked. Mountain lions usually try to bite the head or neck; try to remain standing and face the attacking animal.
Weed Spraying
Please note that weed spraying will take place on Monday, Aug. 29 through Friday, Sept. 2. The second round of fertilization application will begin the week of September 5.
As a reminder, you can visit the landscaping portion of our website for up to date information inclusive of  irrigation, weed spraying schedules, mowing schedule and SDS (Safety Data Sheets).

Green Tip
Please enjoy the following eco-friendly tidbit brought to you by Friends of the Environment:
As reported by the Consumer Price Index, energy costs have risen over 30% from April 2021 to April 2022. One way to keep your home energy costs down is to install motion detectors. We usually think of these just for in home security systems or for our outdoor lights at night. But these sensors can be connected to indoor lights, fans, or any other electrical device. They'll save energy dollars by automatically turning on the device when you enter a room or area of your property and then they'll turn it off when you leave. According to the Department of Energy, you can save up to 30% on your energy bill by installing motion occupancy sensors on the lights in the rooms your family uses the most. So let's get those lights turned off when they aren't needed.
House Bill 22-1137
As announced in previous board meetings, and reflected in the posted meeting minutes, we are working with legal counsel to amend two key policies, ensuring alignment with new Colorado legislation.  HB 22-1137  went into effect on August 9. This new legislation is complex, to ensure that thoughtful drafts are presented for board approval, it is likely that such drafts will be voted on in the September board meeting.  In the meantime, board and management are ensuring that we are in full compliance, given that CCIOA law supersedes our governing documents.
