Plague Found in Valley Fox

Open Space Staff were recently contacted by the Jefferson County Public Health Department to report that a dead fox, which was collected from a residence in Ken-Caryl Valley in late April, has tested positive for plague. Plague is a highly infectious bacterial disease carried by various types of wild rodents and is transmitted primarily by flea bites. Squirrels, rodents, prairie dogs and other mammals, such as rabbits and cats, are susceptible to plague because they carry fleas. The risk of residents contracting plague is extremely low, but people should be aware that summer marks the beginning of the plague season and just a few simple precautions will further reduce that risk. Please see the article linked below with more information about the plague and prevention tips.

Wire Fencing and Deer

The Rangers often assist deer that have their back leg stuck in the welded wire on a split rail fence. In these incidents, the welded wire was pulled away from the wood due to missing fence staples or U nails. Residents are encouraged to periodically walk the fence line and check to make sure the fencing staples or U nails are keeping the wire tight to the wood, which will avoid accidents where deer will get caught while jumping over the fences. The photo with this article shows wire that is not properly attached. If you have any questions or concerns, email Ranger Matt Oven at matto@kcranch.org or call the Rangers at 303-979-1876, ext. 170.

Trash Service Delay Week of Memorial Day

This is a reminder from the Ken-Caryl Ranch trash service provider, Waste Connections, that Memorial Day is an observed holiday. Trash and recycling for all customers will be delayed one day the week of Memorial Day.

Informational Open House for East Plum Thicket-Manzanita Social Trail Conversion

An open house will be held on June 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Dakota Lodge to view plans and answer questions about a proposed new trail project located in the interior open space areas around the neighborhoods immediately north of Bradford K-8 North School. Volunteer Trail Coordinators Jeff Lyslo and Dan Mullins have developed a detailed plan that looks at current conditions, analyzes design options and provides recommendations for multiple existing social trail segments between Deerwood Drive and Valley Parkway and between Woodruff and Mountain Laurel Drive. If the Master Association Board decides to move forward on the project, the earliest construction start date would be spring/summer of 2018. If you are unable to attend the open house, please send your comments to Sean Warren at seanw@kcranch.org.
