Editing checklist
After you write the first draft of your page, use the following checklist to edit your content. Keep an eye out for info that you can clarify, shorten, or even delete.
Check user focus
- Who is the user?
- What do they want to do? (One thing per page)
- When is it done?
Check task direction
-
Does the first sentence explain what the service does?
- Does each sentence help the user with the task?
Shorten content
- Sentences should be under 15 words
- Paragraphs should have 3 sentences or less
- Write subheadings about every 3 paragraphs
- Use bulleted lists instead of long sentence lists
See our SF.gov writing style guide.
