Message from the CTL Director

As we near the end of the 2020-2021 academic year, we hope you will take time to consider the impressive work you have accomplished as teachers during this unprecedented chapter in university instruction. You have faced challenges, made changes, and adapted and developed your teaching methods in ways that have helped and supported our dedicated UAB students.

In the coming months, we encourage you to be thoughtful about the new techniques and methodologies you have employed to engage your students. This summer we will focus on helping you take those things that worked and apply them to next year’s courses. Beginning in June, the CTL will return to offering in-person workshops in our new space on the 4th Floor of Lister Hill Library. We encourage you to finish this semester strong, and stay tuned to future newsletters for summer plans and updates!

Global Awareness Workshop Series

The Global Awareness series is offering two workshops to bolster a deeper understanding of UAB’s diverse student body during the month of April. First, on Friday, April 2, from 10-11:30 AM, Dr. Michelle Allen of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will present Cultural Awareness Building Blocks, a foundational workshop in the DEI sequence offered through the CTL.  Also, Melissa Hawkins, the CTL’s International Teaching and Learning Specialist, will present part 1 of the workshop Exploring UAB International Student Backgrounds on Tuesday, April 13, from 1-2:30 PM, which considers the educational cultural backgrounds of UAB’s international student populations from China, India, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Both workshops are described on the Global Awareness series webpage and count towards earning the Global Awareness certificate

Platinum-Level Capstone Presentation

On Tuesday, April 6, from 1-2 PM, Martha Earwood (Department of Criminal Justice) and Samantha Giordano-Mooga (Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences) will present via Zoom, Implementing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, their Platinum Points Capstone Presentation.
In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to implement a small teaching as research project within your own classroom. The presenters will also discuss the key steps to implementing such a project and allow participants to work through their own potential projects in small groups. Click here to view more information and to register for this event.

eLearning Workshop Series

For those interested in learning more about the educational technology available to UAB faculty, or for faculty earning points towards the Online Design and Teaching Certificate, the CTL is hosting more eLearning workshops this month to help you reach your goal.
In addition to these workshops, the eLearning team provides full support and training for Canvas and academic technologies in all aspects of course and program development. Faculty can request one-on-one or group/departmental training sessions where an instructional technologist will provide customized assistance. Trainings can take place at your campus location, the eLearning office, or virtually via a web conferencing tool. Click here to view more information on faculty support available from eLearning.
