JANUARY VOLUNTEERING
Greetings, Volunteers!

Happy holidays! We hope everyone is having a magical holiday season. We wanted to thank each of you for participating in our volunteer program throughout 2020. Because of your help, our community partners received the extra hands they needed. We're excited for what's ahead, cheers to a new year!

We are always looking for new volunteer opportunities to feature. If you know of any organizations that are currently looking for volunteers, please don't hesitate to reach out!

As always, to sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email, and we will help answer any questions you may have. Remember, events are first-come, first-serve.

Happy Composting,

Merrymeeting Gleaners
The Merrymeeting Gleaners are a 100+ person volunteer group that was formed in 2016 as part of the MFC’s food security work.  Gleaners harvest surplus food from local farms and redistribute it to over 30 organizations that support individuals who require help accessing food in our area.
This time of year they are looking for volunteers to glean storage crops in Dresden on Saturdays (in a heated barn). They are also looking for volunteers to deliver donated produce to organizations in the Bath/Brunswick area on Monday mornings.

Partners for World Health
Partners for World Health collects medical supplies that healthcare facilities in the U.S. are required to discard and ship them to countries in need. In addition, they also organize medical missions to Southeast Asia and Africa for doctors, nurses, and students.
Currently, they are looking for volunteers to sew masks out of blue sterilization material for those on the front lines. They've already distributed over 5,000 masks, but need more! Volunteers are also needed to sew together pre cut gowns for local healthcare workers.

Seeds of Hope
In September, Seeds of Hope Neighborhood Center reopened its doors for people to come in and eat breakfast and lunch, as well as rebuild a sense of community and connection that has been lost through the pandemic. They are also continuing to serve bagged meals at the door for those who do not wish to come inside.
They are in need of kindhearted volunteers to help us with the prep and distribution of food during our opening hours. Because of the virus, everyone inside must wear masks at all times, the only exception being when people are seated and eating/drinking. Additionally, everyone must maintain a 6ft distance to comply with social distancing guidelines.
Monday through Friday: 9:00am - 1:00pm
Location: 35 South St, Biddeford, ME

Shovel Snow for the Elderly
Portland Neighborhoods
Volunteers are asked to shovel the steps and a path from the front door to the sidewalk, as well as the sidewalk in front of the property. They are not asked to shovel the entire driveway or clear snow from roofs. The idea is to create a path that allows the senior citizen, emergency response personnel, Meals on Wheels delivery people, mail carriers, and other visitors to get in and out of the house safely. Once a volunteer receives an assignment, they agree to shovel for that same elderly resident (s) after each snowstorm.
SMAA Phone Pals
The goal of the Phone Pal program is to improve the quality of life for older adults
and adults with disabilities. A Phone Pal Volunteer provides homebound older
adults and individuals with disabilities with companionship by regularly calling on
the phone in an effort to decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness.  Calls
generally occur 1-3 times a week based on the volunteer and client preferences
and availability, and these details will be considered when matching volunteers
with clients.  Volunteers are expected to demonstrate active listening skills and
sensitivity toward possible differences in background or views on things such as
religion, sexual orientation, or cultural experiences.

Email the SMAA for more information or to get involved!
First Baptist Church of Portland Food Pantry
The First Baptist Church of Portland food pantry serves hundreds of individuals each month by collaborating with local fresh food sources and distributing to families in need. They welcome all who come to serve our neighbors in the Greater Portland area! FBC is currently looking for volunteers who have a heart for ensuring people have enough food to eat and are available on Wednesdays to organize and distribute food and/or break down and clean up. They are operating a 'no contact' food pantry for the safety of volunteers and patrons. Volunteers would be able to practice social distancing and be safe and healthy.

Wednesdays: 10:30am - 1:30pm
Location: 360 Canco Road, Portland, ME
Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program
Brunswick, ME
Hungry neighbors in our community need your help to feed their families! Mid Coast Hunger Prevention has a number of initiatives that work to address food insecurity and volunteers place a vital role in fulfilling their mission by preparing meals, distributing groceries, picking up donated food and a variety of other tasks.

This month, MCHPP could use volunteers to sort food donations in the mornings from 8:30-11:30 Monday through Saturday or prepare lunch from 8:45-1:00.
Volunteering with Preble Street
The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
Feed your hungry neighbors! Help serve any of 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at the Preble Street Resource Center Soup Kitchen. Volunteers assist with breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or at the weekly Thursday Food Pantry.
