A Note from the President

Dear Tiger Parents,
I know that many of you have watched our legislature’s special session with trepidation, worried that decisions made at the Capitol would negatively impact LSU’s ability to provide your student with an excellent education. While next year’s state budget still remains unresolved, we believe the Governor’s refusal to cut any additional state general funds from higher education this year is a positive sign.
We will continue to keep you informed as information comes out of the capitol. LSU remains committed to providing a flagship university-level experience. Higher education plays a critical role in preparing individuals for success in their adult years. We’re heading into commencement season, when thousands of our students will walk across the stage in their caps and gowns, having completed a lifelong dream: earning a degree from LSU, a degree with benefits that continue to accrue with the passage of time.
Our top priority has and always will be providing our students with an exceptional educational experience, which is why we vigorously maintain our university’s academic core no matter what challenges we face.
As always, thank you for trusting us with your Tiger.
 F. King Alexander
LSU President

TOPS Update
TOPS remains a great concern for all Louisiana students. The proposed TOPS budget is funded at only 25% of the previous year’s level, which would tremendously reduce access for Louisiana students. However, the Regular Legislative Session doesn’t end until June 6, so much can change between now and then. Fill out the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FASFA) now if you haven’t already. If there is indeed a shortfall, those with completed FASFAs will be given TOPS priority over those who did not submit the paperwork.
Bengal Book Group
LSU Bookstore Upstairs Meeting Room, April 18 from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Encourage your tiger to join the Bengal Book Group as they discuss Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. To learn more about Bengal Book Group or to join, contact Maggi Spurlock at mpsurl1@lsu.edu.
Student Strategy Sessions
Transitioning to college can be tough, but FYE is here to help make it easier. At the beginning of the year students are assigned a FYE staff member based on the first letter of their last name. Our staff members are here to answer any of your students’ questions, help them get involved, and find their place on LSU's campus. Students can schedule a strategy session anytime throughout the year at lsu.campuslabs.com/beacon.

LSU Discover

Undergraduate Research: On April 7, 2016, LSU Discover hosted our 3rd annual Discover Day undergraduate research showcase. LSU Discover is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research and creativity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual student symposium to provide students an avenue to present their work. LSU Discover Day provided an opportunity for students to interact with peers and faculty from across campus working in similar research fields, learn about how research and creativity is conducted in those fields and to develop presentation skills. Through this annual showcase, LSU creates a unique environment for the celebration and promotion of undergraduate student achievement, provides models of exemplary research and creative activities, and helps to improve the state of undergraduate education at the university. Extra exciting news: our keynote speaker was US Astronaut, Col. Al Worden. All LSU Discover Day events are free and open to the public.   Click here for more information:

Finish Strong!
With mid-term exams and Spring Break behind us, the LSU Olinde Career Center wants to partner with you, parents and families, to reach your LSU Tiger and encourage them to finish strong.  Career success often rests on students’ academic performance and career planning.
Academics:  A strong GPA is more than a number. It represents dedication, perseverance and the ability to set and work toward a goal - skills and character traits that last a lifetime, empowering success.
Career Planning:  Employers look for people who can demonstrate initiative, big picture thinking and planfulness. They are impressed by those who make steps toward careers early in college.

What Parents Can Do
  • Encourage your student to keep their focus and to put their best effort into the remainder of the semester to achieve good grades and lay the foundation for future coursework.
  • Remind your Tiger the LSU Olinde Career Center can help! Point your undecided student, or those who may not be thriving in their major, toward our online resources, career assessments and individual appointments to help guide them. Students will schedule fall and summer courses this month, so decisions should be made now.
  • If your student is achieving well and happy with their major, help them connect their studies to careers by reviewing “What Can I Do with This Major?”
  • Suggest your student consider registering for HRE 3331, Strategic Career Planning. This three-credit elective course provides students with a guided process of self-assessment, skills development, career exploration and job search strategies.
  • Talk with your student about summer plans. Summer job opportunities are going fast and only a few internships are still available. Final plans are needed now to secure career-related  experience. This is a great way to check off a few items from their Four-Year Career Plan!
  • If your student is graduating in May and does not yet have a concrete plan for what comes next, please direct them to the LSU Olinde Career Center for help with the job search, résumé writing or preparing for graduate or professional school.
We are here to help!
Check out the resources and services the LSU Olinde Career Center has to offer on our website lsu.edu/careercenter or by visiting 158 LSU Student Union. Office hours: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Contact us at 225-578-2162 or career@lsu.edu.

LSU Student Union Art Gallery
Matt Shlian Exhibit
April 15—May 24, 2016
LSU Student Union Art Gallery; 2nd Floor of the Student Union
Matt Shlian, a paper engineer rooted in book arts, print media and design, brings his traveling to the LSU Student Union Art Gallery from April 15- May 24, 2016. The exhibit is free & open to everyone
Through the exhibit, Shlian explores how fine art, design, math and science relate to each other. Shlian allows his work to evolve on its own by beginning with an initial fold—a single action that then causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds—that ultimately manifest in his drawings and three-dimensional forms.
Shlian also uses his engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture, collaborating with scientists at the University of Michigan. While researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principles, he sees their inquiry as a basis for artistic inspiration, according to Shlian.

LSU Academic Programs Abroad

Academic Programs Abroad works diligently each year to ensure that students know a Study Abroad experience is not outside their financial reach. We maintain an extensive list of scholarships available from within the university and from other providers. For undergraduate students who want to spend a year abroad after graduation or who are transitioning from undergraduate to graduate studies, the Fulbright Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious awards an undergraduate student can receive. The Fulbright program offers students two different educational experiences. Participants can either conduct their own research for a year in a foreign country, or they can travel to a non- English speaking country to teach the English language. Fulbright covers all costs, so no student is encumbered with such a large financial obligation. LSU students have been successful in receiving this award. They have benefitted immensely from the educational and networking opportunities the program has to offer, and we encourage all interested students to apply. The official LSU on campus application deadline for  the 2016-17 program is: September 12, 2016. Please be aware that this is four weeks prior to the official Fulbright application deadline of October 11, 2016.

LSU Campus Life

Only one month left of the Spring 2016 Semester! We have a jam packed April featuring our largest service project, Geaux BIG Baton Rouge, on April 16; we are expecting more than 1600 students who have registered. Other service projects this month are Friday Night Out on April 8, and our Volunteer LSU Volunteer Week kicking off with the Potato Drop on April 12.
We are also offering a number of different ways for your student to relax and recharge, ranging from the last Open Mic Night of the semester, two free showings of the newest Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, and Cascade, a rollerskating party on the Parade Ground.
Your student may also want to attend two Involvement on the Geaux seminars to build leadership skills for success not only in school and their future careers, but also in their personal lives as well.
Sincerely,
LSU Campus Life
