Letters from: President Mark DeMarco and Vice President for Academic Life, Dr. Heather Alumbaugh

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

All Saints Day and All Souls Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on those who have passed away and for those saints who have showed us how to live our lives. They have done the ordinary, extraordinarily well. I know that we have all experienced the loss of someone close to us in our lives. That loss creates an ache in our hearts. When someone close to us dies, we should ask the question - What have I learned from this person and how will it affect my life?

VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC LIFE

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,

Since I have started working at De La Salle, November has taken on a new pace that mirrors that of the school. It begins with the All Saints Day Mass, seems to always include NCS playoffs, and will end not only with Thanksgiving but also with Company’s fall theatrical production. As I have written before, as a life-long theater lover, the production of the school's plays always inspire me, most specifically because of the way they showcase student courage, growth, and talent. Our fall play is no exception. ... Continue reading

HARLAN COHEN AT
DE LA SALLE ON NOV. 7
This is a free event,
registration not required
New York best-selling author, Harlan Cohen, will be on the De La Salle campus on Wednesday, November 7. Co-hosted by the College Counseling Departments and the Parent Associations at De La Salle and Carondelet, the presentation will take place in the De La Salle Theatre, starting at 7 pm.
Cohen will be here to present his book, Happy, Healthy, Almost Stress-Free College Planning: A New Approach to Search & Selection
Cohen is a nationally syndicated advice columnist and speaker at over 500 high school and college campuses. An author of five books, he is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, and has appeared on the Today Show.
Did you miss De La Salle Giving Day? No problem! Tuesday, November 27, is a great day to give too. A day dedicated to giving, #GivingTuesday is a global movement to encourage philanthropy during the holiday season, that De La Salle is proud to be part of.

DOGFIGHT
Opening night for the 2018 De La Salle Fall Musical Dogfight, will be Thursday, November 29 at 7 p.m., at the Brother Celestine Cormier, FSC Theatre.
Dogfight chronicles the last evening of six Marines before they depart to Vietnam. They host a "dogfight" which is a contest to see who can bring the "ugliest" girl. The story then unfolds as our protagonist comes to realize he has real feelings for Rose, the girl he chose to subject to this humiliation. Rose is the example of compassion and empathy that is the heart of the production.

This show asks questions about mob-mentality effects, entitled actions, standing up to friends, and surviving in a world of war and returning home. Although it is an upbeat and fun musical, there is an undertone of layered seriousness that could be mistaken if not seen with mature eyes, therefore the PG-13 rating.

Dogfight deals with sexual harassment, objectification, and abuse. Our theatre program decided to join forces with our Mentors in Violence Prevention Program on campus and bring awareness to these issues, that our students face in high school and beyond. Our production is intended to spark tough conversations, not provide answers.

LIBRARY STREAM WEEK

Let’s explore! October 22-26 was the Library’s Second Annual STREAM Week, and it was a blast!  The students engaged in creativity, design, and discovery as they explored sound waves, circuits, acceleration, velocity, and more.
Our goal is to not only provide access to information, but to engage students in critical thinking and innovation, and help students find the fun in reading, science, technology, etc. Students coded Spheros, measured acceleration by building balloon cars, and created their own Bristlebots for the Bristlebot Race.

The Library also offers a robust collection of fiction and nonfiction books to support students in their studies. We have three credentialed librarians to help with outside reading selections, research projects, and fact-finding missions. Additionally, when students are away from school, the databases, SpartanGuides, e-Reference Books, and e-book collection are all available 24/7 through the Library’s home page (www.dlshs.org/academic-life/library-home).

We love having students in the library and the collaborative spirit, energy, and creativity that they bring.
