LONGVIEW PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER
LongCon, Saturday February 25th 2017
LongCon
Saturday, February 25 | 11 AM - 3 PM
Come and celebrate the books, shows, films, and games you love at LongCon! 2017 is the sophomore year of our library mini convention. Last February, LongCon guests enjoyed a panel discussion on cosplay basics and an all-ages costume contest and had the opportunity to craft costume ears and tails, play in a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament, and more. This year we are getting geared up for another spectacular event. Up in the main reading room at 11:30 our panel discussion will focus on fanfiction and other fan art, and we'll have fun crafts and a game room downstairs. The all-ages costume contest will be held at 1:00 PM. Pre-registration is not necessary.
If you are interested in participating as a vendor, please contact Becky to reserve a table: becky.standal@ci.longview.wa.us or 360.442.5323

March Book Three
Skaugsetting
with Library Director Chris Skaugset
With all of the accolades and awards that John Lewis’ March has received since the publication of volume 1 in 2013, I thought I would take a few moments to talk to you about graphic novels.  Of course, graphic stories can be traced back as far as the cave paintings of Lascaux and have continued on even with the eventual creation of the written word through illuminated texts and children’s picture books.  Today’s graphic novels aren’t just the comic book characters and situations that you may or may not have read as a child.  They can be, but they can also be much more.  While you still can find Superman, Iron Man, or Archie, graphic novels really are exactly what they say they are: novels, or non-fiction, in a graphic form that can be both literary and artistic marvels.  March is the three volume story of John Lewis’s life and his role in the civil rights movement.  Individual volumes in the series have won the Coretta Scott King Award, the Michael J. Printz Award, the National Book Award (the first time a graphic novel has won), and many others.  Some other graphic novels a new reader of this form may want to take a look at includes Craig Thompson’s Blankets, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Jonathan Case’s Dear Creature, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Megan Kelso’s Artichoke Tales, Joe Sacco’s Footnotes in Gaza, Mariko and Jillian Tamaki’s This One Summer, and Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid in the World.  Most of the graphic novels can be found under the call number 741.5, but others may be under other call numbers depending upon their subject.  Come check some out today, they are worth it.
