DCYF CELEBRATES 26TH ANNIVERSARY OF FREE SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM FOR SAN FRANCISCO CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Sites in every San Francisco neighborhood will serve free lunches and snacks to anyone under age 18 from June 5 through August 11.

San Francisco, CA – This summer the San Francisco Free Summer Meals Program will celebrate 26 years of serving free, healthy meals and snacks to San Francisco children and youth during the months that school is not in session.
Sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered locally by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF), 70 sites in every San Francisco neighborhood will offer free breakfast, lunches and/or afternoon snacks to children and youth ages 18 and under every Monday through Friday from June 5 to August 11. No proof of need, registration, or identification is required in order to receive a lunch or snack. The only requirement: arrive at a designated site during one of the 19 open site’s serving time.
“Many families depend on free and reduced-cost school meals during the school year and struggle to replace those meals for their children during the summer months. Our Summer Meals Program bridges the meal gap by providing access to nutritious breakfast and lunch meals including snacks at convenient locations throughout San Francisco during out of school time.” said DCYF Executive Director Maria Su. “DCYF is proud to partner with the USDA, our nonprofit partners, and Chefables to provide this critical resource to San Francisco’s children and youth.” DCYF’s Nutrition Programs, which include the Afterschool Meal and the Summer Meal Programs, are designed to ensure that the basic nutrition needs of children are met as well as to help youth establish a healthy relationship with food. In 2022, DCYF provided 190,360 meals and 160,418 snacks to children and youth.
A complete list of program sites, addresses, and serving times is available on the homepage of the DCYF website: www.dcyf.org. Families can also find meal and snack sites by calling the San Francisco Services Call Center at 3-1-1 or the United Way Helplink line at 2-1-1.

DCYF also employs trained program monitors to conduct regulatory visits at all serving sites throughout the summer.
