The "Lucky Seven" Commit to Play in the 2020 Mitsubishi Electric Classic
All seven past champions from 2013 - 2019 will play at this year's PGA TOUR Champions event at TPC Sugarloaf, April 13 - 19
ATLANTA – March 6, 2020 - Officials of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, returning to TPC Sugarloaf April 13 – 19, today announced that all seven champions are returning to play in this year’s PGA TOUR Champions tournament. Bernhard Langer (2013), Miguel Ángel Jiménez (2014), Olin Browne (2015), Woody Austin (2016), Stephen Ames (2017), Steve Flesch (2018) and Scott McCarron (2019) will compete in the eighth installment of the tournament that takes place in Duluth, Georgia.
“The Mitsubishi Electric Classic looks forward to hosting all seven of our past tournament champions,” said Mitsubishi Electric Classic Executive Director, Monte Ortel. “Winning the Mitsubishi Electric Classic has meant so much to each player, whether it was their first PGA TOUR Champions victory or securing the much needed points in the yearlong Charles Schwab Cup standings, each player realizes how important winning this tournament can be,” he added.
Defending Mitsubishi Electric Classic champion, Scott McCarron, has collected 11 PGA TOUR Champions victories during his career. In 2019, he also led the Tour with 14 top-10 finishes and was the Charles Schwab Cup points leader for nearly seven months before claiming the Cup for the first time last November.
Bernhard Langer claimed his 18th career PGA TOUR Champions title at the inaugural Mitsubishi Electric Classic in 2013. Currently, Langer has a total of 41 PGA TOUR Champions victories and has a record five Charles Schwab Cup titles since joining the PGA TOUR Champions in 2007. Langer has played in every Mitsubishi Electric Classic since its inception.
At the 2014 Mitsubishi Electric Classic, Miguel Ángel Jiménez became the 18th PGA TOUR Champions player to win in his debut event. Jiménez has a total of nine PGA TOUR Champions victories since joining the Tour.
Olin Browne was the 2015 winner of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, by draining a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole in a weather shortened Saturday finish. 2016 Mitsubishi Electric Classic champion, Woody Austin, became the first multiple winner of the season when he defeated Wes Short, Jr., in a two-hole playoff. Stephen Ames broke through for his first PGA TOUR Champions victory in 2017, setting a new tournament 54-hole scoring record with his 15-under-par 201. In 2018, Steve Flesch earned his first title on PGA TOUR Champions in a two-hole playoff victory over Bernhard Langer and Scott Parel.
The Mitsubishi Electric Classic is more than a globally televised golf tournament; organizers have created a week-long series of events to help increase excitement and involve the community. From Executive Women’s Day to an Adaptive Golf Clinic, to the PGA TOUR Superstore Kids’ Day and more, there is something for everyone! In addition, a new hospitality venue called The Perch, presented by Axis Companies, will provide guests with unobstructed views of the course and access to craft beer from local brewers StillFire Brewing and Slow Pour Brewing Company. In addition, Tequila Mama Taqueria will be serving its local fare as part of the experience.
Tickets for the tournament are available now on the Mitsubishi Electric Classic website with daily grounds passes as low as $20. Kids ages 16 and under are complimentary when accompanied by a ticket holder. Want the VIP experience? Daily passes for The Perch are available for $125 from Friday to Sunday, or $375 for the three days of competition. Tickets include two complimentary craft beer vouchers and a complimentary lunch.
