Research News

From the Associate Dean for Reseach

Many faculty in CPH are directly or indirectly involved in the study of maternal health. The high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in the U.S. continues to be a significant public health problem, particularly among specific populations at increased risk. Even among Hispanic people who were previously at lowest risk, maternal mortality rates have more than doubled in the past 5 years. If you haven’t read it already I recommend a recent Viewpoint written by several collaborators from NIH, including  Dr. Bianchi from National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Dr. Zenk from the National Institute of Nursing Research, and Dr. Clayton from the Office of Research on Women’s Health. The article outlines some of the goals and progress under the NIH Implementing a Maternal Health and Pregnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) initiative which began in 2019. The multifactorial IMPROVE approach ranges from partnerships between academic and community organizations, to training and mentorship for community groups, to interventions, to new point-of-care, mobile health and home-based diagnostics, to risk prediction and data harmonization.
Here in CPH we will soon be taking over a large and novel biobank of more than 400,000 obstetric and perinatal specimens. The databank uniquely contains cohort data on 4,000 mother-father-baby triads, a rare asset in public health. The biospecimens are linked to clinical records, sociodemographic data, and up to 8 years of postnatal follow-up health information, and span genetic, epigenetic, and environmental data. We will keep you updated on these developments.
For our faculty who are involved in climate change research, you may be interested to know that AHRQ has announced its interest in research on Climate Change and Healthcare, i.e., the health care delivery system. The three primary areas are:
  • Reducing the healthcare sector’s greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint.
  • Creating resilient healthcare systems and communities that can plan, prepare respond, and adapt to climate-related threats.
  • Addressing the inequitable impacts of climate change.
