A Message from the Consul General
| |
| Ken Okaniwa
Consul General of Japan in Miami
|
| March saw many Japanese events in Florida. A delegation of Fulbright Alums lead by Mr. Taniguchi, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, visited Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties as part of a cultural exchange program. They spoke about how Japan is addressing challenges such as ageing and declining society, environmental protection, business innovation and women's empowerment, all relevant to Florida. The lectures drew a large audience and were followed by very interesting Q&A. I hope the visit will lead to new cooperation in the future.
Also, if you have an interest in women’s empowerment, take a look at the results of the World Assembly for Women (WAW! 2016) organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last December. The meeting was opened by Prime Minister Abe, and featured distinguished speakers from Japan and abroad such as Ms. Marne Levine, COO of Instagram.
Persona Non Grata, a film about Consul Chiune Sugihara who helped Jewish people flee Europe during WWII, continued its screenings in Boca Raton, Ft. Myers and Pensacola. At the Boca Raton Jewish Film Festival, I had the pleasure of meeting the director of the film, Mr. Cellin Gluck, whose parents are Japanese and Jewish American.
April heralds spring in Japan. Although Florida does not have any cherry blossoms, it too will have spring themed events. Morikami Museum and Garden will be hosting its annual spring festival, the Hatsume Fair, during the first weekend of April. The hit anime movie Your Name (Kimi no na wa) will be screened in Florida in Mid-April. Hope you have a chance to enjoy these events.
