Rooibos is an immensely versatile plant when it comes to how it can be used and consumed. Rooibos can be enjoyed as a delicious tea, but it can also be used when cooking! Adding Rooibos to your dishes not only gives it a unique taste, but it also enhances the nutritional value of the food, seeing as Rooibos contains many beneficial minerals and antioxidants. In fact, many are calling Rooibos a superfood!
To demonstrate this versatility, celeb foodies, Kamini Pather – MasterChef SA winner - and Sabastian “Bas” Newman – well-known pastry chef - will be experimenting with the tea during the month of May to add some sparkle to lockdown cooking. The SA Rooibos Council has taken this initiative.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council says that, while Rooibos is known for its health benefits due to its abundance of antioxidants, when we think about cooking with it many just don’t know where to start.
“That’s why we roped in Kamini and Bas to show home cooks how it’s done. It’s really easy and once you’ve mastered it, you’ll be able to reap the benefits of Rooibos when eating too.”
Watch Pather demonstrate how to make finger-licking Rooibos lamb riblets and spicy Rooibos Chicken Satay, while Newman shares his take on a simply irresistible Rooibos and fig pavlova in a series of cooking videos posted on the SA Rooibos Council’s Facebook page.

Under level 3 of the national lockdown in South Africa, many people have already returned to work or will be returning to work shortly. Although this is a good thing, many might be looking for ways to reduce their stress levels, as going back to work during these uncertain times may seem daunting. Coping with a backlogged workload might also cause some anxiety.
Stress can cause some serious physical damage to a person’s body. Continuous stress and depression, linked with risk factors such as diabetes, obesity and unhealthy lifestyles have been linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The development of CVD and high cholesterol are closely linked with chronic exposure to high levels of glucocorticoid. This can impact insulin production, metabolic diseases and obesity.
There is overwhelming research that suggests that Rooibos may help to reduce this damage caused by stress. How exactly can this be the case, you might ask?
The polyphenols in Rooibos can decrease the production of cortisol and corticosterone - also known as the stress hormones. The soothing anti-anxiety properties of Rooibos are of the oldest anecdotal properties attributed to Rooibos consumption.

This time of the year, many people are fighting the onset of hay fever. June is typically known as the pollen month and pollen, of course, leads to hay fever. People that are suffering from hay fever probably have tried all sorts of medication and remedies to curb its effects.
Histamine is a natural protein. The substance is always present in small amounts in your body and is largely stored in your mast cells. These cells play a role in your defences and are in contact with the outside world. They are located in your skin, your palate, your oesophagus, stomach, intestines, windpipe and lungs. As soon as mast cells come into contact with unwanted invaders such as pollen, they act and release histamine, causing inflammation and other unpleasant symptoms. By taking antihistamines, you can thus help your body battle against hay fever.
Rooibos is known for its histamine-inhibiting effect. It is therefore used by some doctors for food allergies, eczema, asthma and hay fever. Rooibos is also packed with antioxidants and has a balancing effect on your nervous system. So be sure to stock up on a few boxes of rooibos tea. It can be described as a natural remedy for hay fever and might just make a lasting difference in the lives of those that suffer from severe hay fever.
By the way, it is naturally caffeine-free, so you can replenish your mug all night long!

Winter also brings about a cold and flu season. Let’s face it, there is never a good time to get a cold and if you have one, all you really want is for it to pass so you can get back to living your best life.
Many studies have suggested that Rooibos tea can help to strengthen one’s immune system, thereby helping to protect against the common cold and flu. Rooibos goes further though, as it can also help to alleviate some of the symptoms that are associated with colds and flu. This includes relief for congestion and a sore throat. Rooibos tea is high in antioxidants, which are essential for the body when it needs to fight infection from outside sources.
So, to limit your chances of getting sick this flu season, or to make sure you recover quickly if you already have the flu, be sure to drink as much Rooibos tea as you can! The recommended daily intake is 6 cups per day.

Skincare isn’t only about what you put on your body, it’s also about what you put into your body. Eating a balanced diet and getting the right blend of vitamins and minerals can do wonders for your beauty game – especially when you’re already set with your product regimen.
In a recent article by SheFinds, it is argued that Rooibos is one of the teas that dermatologists recommend people drink in order to promote healthy skin. Specifically, it offers anti-ageing effects to those who consume it.
The antioxidant properties of this tea help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. So if you are looking for a natural way to ensure a radiant complexion, consider adding Rooibos tea to your diet.
