The Oregon Department of Human Services Aging and People with Disabilities
(ODHS/APD) recognizes the direct care workforce is diverse in terms of age, race,
ethnicity, national origin, gender identity and sexuality, faith, and culture. At the same
time, we know that some direct care workers experience racism, sexism and other
forms of discrimination that can affect job performance and job tenure.
To better understand the direct care worker experience as it relates to sustaining the
workforce, promoting worker well-being, and promoting quality care, ODHS contracted
with the Institute on Aging (IOA) at Portland State University (PSU) to study these topics and prepare a report to inform policies and programs.
The IOA study team will conduct interviews with the below groups to hear their stories
and experiences working or living in assisted living and residential care communities:
• Administrators or other leadership team members
• Direct care workers
• Former direct care workers
• Residents
• Management company executives
Each interview takes about 1 hour, and participant’s names and workplaces will remain confidential and will not be shared with ODHS/APD.
Direct care workers, former direct care workers, and residents will receive $50 for their time and participation. Qualified individuals interested in participating can sign up here:
