Too often, those who die on the streets or in shelters are not connected to family or support systems. Many do not have funerals or memorials where they are properly honored. They deserve better.

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council, National Coalition for the Homeless, National Alliance to End Homelessness, and the National Consumer Advisory Board invite you to join us for a streaming observance of Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, where we will honor those we've lost and reaffirm our commitment to working toward a world where no life is lived or lost in homelessness.

Coffee Chat: Winter Planning and Updated COVID-19 Guidance

Grab a coffee and join us for a discussion about winter planning for people experiencing homelessness as communities face numerous respiratory illnesses in circulation. We'll hear from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the latest COVID-19 guidance and share the latest COVID-19 Pandemic Manual. Ask questions, share what's going well in your community, and talk through the challenges you face.

Issue Brief: Medicaid Reimbursement Principles for Medical Respite Care

As communities across the country continue to adopt effective approaches to homelessness, state Medicaid agencies and managed care plans are increasingly turning to medical respite care programs to provide post-acute care to a vulnerable, high-need population.  

This issue brief describes a set of principles for Medicaid reimbursement that states and health care plans can use in their collaborations with medical respite care programs.

Issue Brief: Impact of Encampment Sweeps on People Experiencing Homelessness

As the cost of housing continues to exceed income, the number and scale of homeless encampments is only increasing. Community responses to remove, or “sweep,” encampments are understandable but ultimately harmful.

This new issue brief describes the impact of sweeps on encampment residents and local communities, and provides guidance for more constructively responding to unsheltered homelessness.

$2.9M Grant Supports Behavioral Health Service Expansion in Medical Respite Settings Across 3 States

The Council will bring new behavioral health services into medical respite programs in Florida, Minnesota, and North Carolina thanks to a three-year, $2.9 million grant from the United Health Foundation.

"This partnership will result in better access to high-quality, comprehensive integrated care for patients experiencing homelessness," says Bobby Watts, the Council's CEO. The funding will strengthen medical respite programs as they determine how to sustain behavioral health services. Plus, these efforts will help communities meet needs in more comprehensive and equitable ways.
