Labor Day of Action November 2014

On November 15 the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council (CLC) and United Way of the Capital Region mobilized more than 60 local union members, their families and friends for Labor Day of Action.

Volunteers completed projects such as sorting food donations, painting, serving breakfast at a shelter, tree trimming, and indoor and outdoor clean-up. Agencies helped include: Capital Area Greenbelt Association, Catholic Charities Interfaith Shelter, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Dauphin County Library System, United Way of the Capital Region and Upper Dauphin Human Services Center. For the Labor Day of Action’s signature project, the Coalition of Labor Union Women partnered with The American Red Cross’ Mail for Heroes program to make more than 350 holiday cards for deployed veterans.

The event kicked off with a breakfast sponsored by Cliff Ackman of AFSCME, Local 2456 in memory of Betty Beck, retired United Steelworker and community advocate. Featured speakers were Tim Whelan, United Way of the Capital Region vice president of community impact, and Mike Powell, director of Habitat for Humanity’s Veteran’s Repair Corp program.

Labor Supports United Way’s 2014 Campaign

It’s not too late to make a difference in our community! With just a few weeks left in the 2014 fundraising campaign, now is the time to make your donation to United Way. If your workplace is not running a campaign, you can make a pledge online at www.uwcr.org, or you can contact Karen Overly Smith at ksmith@uwcr.org

This year labor also supported United Way by providing three loaned labor leaders for two months to help with the State Employee Combined Appeal (SECA). Special thanks to Annette Sawyers and Helen Elliott of AFSCME District Council 90, and Bill Wilson of SEIU 668 for their hard work!
