We must still meet accessibility standards in 2026
Accessibility Mission: Important FAQs |
Do we have another year to meet the accessibility deadline? |
No. The April 24 deadline for ADA Title II accessibility compliance set by the U.S. Department of Justice was extended for one year, to April 26, 2027. But additional policies remain in effect:
|
-
UC’s Information Technology Accessibility Policy (ITAP) still requires conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA by April 24, 2026.
-
The Section 504 compliance deadline has not changed and remains May 11, 2026. It carries the same requirements, and applies to UC as a federally funded institution.
|
We should continue following current plans to meet 2026 requirements. In other words — the accessibility mission remains active.
|
Is “archived” content held to the same accessibility standard as the rest of our pages? |
Yes — in most cases. Any digital content that people use to apply for, gain access to, or take part in your services, programs, or activities must be accessible.
There is a narrow exception for archival material. To qualify as “archival,” content must meet four criteria:
|
-
The content was created before April 24, 2026, and
- The content is kept only for reference, research, or record-keeping, and
- The content is kept in a special area for archived content, and
- The content has not been changed since it was archived.
|
Content must meet current accessibility requirements if *any one* of these conditions are not met.
Be aware that even if the archived content meets all criteria, it must be promptly remediated for anyone who requests that it be made accessible to them.
We advise removing content if it’s no longer actively used, unless it’s required for legal purposes. If you decide to keep older material, run it through Siteimprove to correct any issues.
