ADVOCATING FOR KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE FROM GUN VIOLENCE

The Academy is a proud signatory to this letter to state and congressional representatives and the president, along with 11 other small, independent schools in our region. In the aftermath of yet another school shooting, student safety and well being is foremost in our minds and we are compelled to register our concern that our leaders take a moral stand on the matter of stricter gun laws.

The Academy Celebrates Holi

Yesterday, The Academy community observed Holi, a Hindu festival which celebrates "the vibrancy of spring, fertility, love and the triumph of good over evil".

Outnumbered but not Outscored!

The faculty basketball team once again finished its season in undefeated fashion. In its first and last game of the season, the faculty basketball triumphantly defeated the student basketball teams 69-61 on Thursday!! Special thanks to Steve ZA for reffing the game and Coaches BZ, Fagan, and Spooner for a great season.

A Message from Tucker Z-A, on Behalf of the Health and Wellness Council: Keeping our Community Healthy

At a small school, germs spread quickly among students and teachers. When one person gets sick, everyone is at risk of getting sick. The members of the Health and Wellness Council want to remind you of this and that you’re most contagious when your symptoms are just starting (such as the beginnings of a sore throat or general fatigue and congestion) and when you may think that you're most able to push through the day.

Even though you may feel like you’re more than ready for a fun day at school, despite a sore throat or a small cough, coming in puts the rest of our community at risk; it’s better for the community when you stay home. Although you may be worried about missing class time, notes, or an assignment, we want to remind you that your teachers are more than willing to help you catch up on what you missed if you make an effort to go see them, and your peers can help you piece together notes from the classes you missed. With a community as small as ours, if you’re really worried about missing a class you could even organize a Skype or Facetime call with a classmate in order to listen in.

We write this as a friendly reminder that when you feel sick you should stay home and take care of yourself and by doing so you will be taking care of our community as well. Let’s keep our school a happy and healthy place to learn.

CONFERENCE SIGN-UP (for Spring Conferences, April 5 & 6)

The Academy strives to give students opportunities to reflect on their learning and progress in school. While they are supported by a team of peers and adults, it is ultimately the students that are responsible for setting goals for themselves, tracking their progress, and gathering and responding to feedback. Twice a year, at the end of the first and third quarter, students are responsible for reflecting on their learning and progress toward their goals through facilitating conferences in each discipline that include their parents or guardians, and teacher. These conferences will put students in a leadership role, rather than in a typical conference role of bystander, as they lead the discussion about their successes and areas for growth while responding to questions and feedback from the adult participants in the conversation.

We ask everyone to please sign up for a conference slot as soon as possible. If you have multiple children at the school, you may sign up for multiple slots (if you wish). We will then create a schedule for when you are here so that you have 15-minute sessions with each individual teacher during your conference period. We will do our best to stick to the agreed-upon schedule, but unforeseen circumstances sometimes require that people must remain a few minutes after their scheduled end time in order to meet.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you all in person. Please remember that there is no school for students on Thursday afternoon (4/5) or all-day Friday (4/6).

GRANDPARENTS AND FAMILY FRIENDS DAY:
INVITEE NAMES AND ADDRESSES NEEDED

Invitations will be going out before Spring Break for our April 13 all-day visit day for current grandparents and other special adult friends of our students. If we don't have the names and contact information for your child's invitees, please send that information to Martha Tirk.

APC News

Approximately 50 parents, students, family members and one Headmaster took advantage of the Hibernation break out last Saturday at the Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley (SFBA), sponsored by the APC.  New acquaintances were made, bowling techniques refined, and a hope for another such gathering expressed. Thanks to SFBA for giving us a half price discount and opening up early so we could have the alleys to ourselves.

Be sure to visit the refreshment table in the Common Room during the Intermission of the much anticipated drama production.

ACADEMY BENEFITS FROM AMAZON SMILE

If you're an Amazon shopper, please consider making your purchases through smile.amazon.com. The Academy is a registered charity, and all you need to do is designate our school to receive a donation from Amazon valued at .5% of your purchases. CUBA TRAVELERS' PEOPLE TO PEOPLE EFFORT - A REQUEST

While in Cuba over Spring Break, we will be visiting the Korimakao Cultural Project, a performing arts center in a relatively rural area of the island with a mission to provide music and dance opportunities in an area with less access than that available in more urban settings. Participants range in age from 13 to 30. They could use things like guitar strings (classical or acoustic), flash drives and external hard drives for music storage, instrument tuners, drumsticks, drum patches, guitar picks, flutes, and violin strings. These things are expensive and not always easy to come by for them.

As a school that values the performing arts, it will be exciting for us to see and hear what the Korimakao folks are working on. We'd love to bring some of these items with us, so if anyone wants to make a contribution to the effort, please send in supplies before Spring Break. Contact Phoebe Walker or Martha Tirk for more information. Thanks for your consideration

Signs of Spring

Mr. White was so happy on Tuesday, to find the first crocus blossoms of 2018!

Spring Sports Start Monday, March 26!

Ultimate and lacrosse players should be prepared with cleats and athletic attire. As you look at the game schedule on the school calendar, please note that dismissal, game, and return times and location are noted in the event details.  Please be patient with us as we figure out high school Ultimate rosters. John Schatz will communicate them to players and parents by Thursday, March 29. Families of kayakers will be contacted separately.
