Advocating for Clear Rights for Academic Inventions |
GW strongly believes in promoting public access to inventions and technologies created by universities, including drugs and other medical innovations for which the federal government funded some of the basic research. In support of GW innovators, Vice Provost for Research Pamela Norris submitted comments on the Draft Guidance Framework for Considering the Exercise of March-In Rights released by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Norris's letter calls on NIST to reconsider its approach, arguing that using this mechanism would likely have the unintended consequence of chilling innovation and disrupting collaboration between universities and industry. The letter aligns with feedback from many higher education and technology commercialization organizations. Read the full letter.

Reminder: Flag Limited Submission Opportunities as Early as Possible |
When evaluating funding opportunities, please take note If the sponsor limits the number of applications from a single institution. These are called “limited submission” or “limited proposal” opportunities, and they require institutional endorsement for submission. If a principal investigator wishes to apply to a limited submission opportunity, they should flag it for the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) as soon as possible by emailing reshelp@gwu.edu. In these cases, OVPR will create an internal process to determine the proposal(s) that can move forward. Questions about limited submission opportunities can be sent to reshelp@gwu.edu.
