G&G editors recently spent three days in New Orleans, enjoying much of what the Crescent City has to offer, all in the name of research. (It’s a tough job, we know.) Asheville. During the dog days of summer, Interstate 26 between North and South Carolina hums with place-swappers: highlanders head to the beach and Lowcountry folks chase cooler mountain air. My husband and I recently joined the throngs seeking Blue Ridge beauty in Asheville, and we especially loved the:

Digs: The Radical hotel, a new art-filled perch in the River Arts District, put us just minutes away from all the antiques shops we flagged on our shared Google Maps. The 77,000-square-foot Antique Tobacco Barn was our favorite, followed closely by Marquee. We refueled with dinner back at the hotel’s Golden Hour restaurant—chef Jacob Sessoms honors and elevates local ingredients like market tomatoes, cream peas, and Sunburst Farms trout, and the staff was so friendly and in-the-know.

Music: The always-awesome Grey Eagle music venue recently opened a new outdoor stage, the Outpost, shaded by sycamore trees along the French Broad River. A concert there felt like the perfect night already, and then the band Fruit Bats played my favorite of their songs, My Sweet Midwest.

Coffee with a view: On the way home, we detoured along the Blue Ridge Parkway for breakfast at the Pisgah Inn and a quick, foggy hike to the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower. We took a couple Polaroids of the panoramic views, and then joined our fellow Sunday travelers back on the highway to home.
