UMSL Veterans Day Flag Raising Ceremony


Josh Evans, the coordinator of the UMSL Veterans Center, welcomed the assembled crowd and introduced student veteran and music major Krishaun Dotson-Orange, who played “Reveille” and “To the Color” on his trumpet as a color guard from UMSL’s Army ROTC program raised the American flag.

Area Assistant Principals Complete Character Education focused Emerging Leaders Academy 


Twenty local school administrators recently graduated from the Character Education focused Emerging Leaders Academy. The professional development program for St. Louis area assistant principals is an initiative of the Leadership Academy in Character Education program created by the Center for Character and Citizenship, which is housed in the UMSL College of Education. Through the workshops, participants gain knowledge, skills and resources needed to realize character education programs in their schools.

Education alumna Elizabeth Bleier invests in the region’s future as executive director of Teach For America St. Louis


Teach For America St. Louis named Elizabeth Bleier executive director. Bleier originally came to St. Louis through a Teach For America placement, earning her teaching certificate and an MA in special education at the UMSL College of Education.

Education and English alumna Eleanor Taylor connects to students and family history through language learning

Eleanor Taylor, an education and English alumna, was one of seven finalists for the 2022 Missouri Teacher of the Year. Taylor has also taken opportunities to travel the globe, expanding her horizons and understanding of language education.

Teach in 12 graduate Scott Boyd goes from graphic design to teaching


After working as a graphic designer for an apparel company, Scott Boyd decided to pursue a career in education. Boyd completed the College of Education’s Teach in 12 program and is working as an art teacher at Lucas Crossing School Complex in the Normandy Schools Collaborative.


Best Health Degrees rates UMSL clinical mental health counseling MEd 13th in US


Best Health Degrees ranked the University of Missouri–St. Louis Master of Education in Counseling with an emphasis in clinical mental health counseling Top 13 on its list “25 Best Counseling Master’s Programs for 2022.” Among the 25 programs recognized, UMSL has the only program ranked in Missouri.

UMSL celebrating first-generation students

UMSL is celebrating first-generation students, who face unique challenges navigating the college environment without family members who’ve been through it to answer their questions and lend support. The Opportunity Scholars Program is one UMSL initiative directed at supporting first-generation students. 

A revamped Sue Shear Leadership Academy returns to campus

UMSL students Beauty Cooper (left) and Tori Tappe were part of a cohort of six women who participated in the Sue Shear Leadership Academy this summer. The program, held virtually this year, is an intensive six-day leadership development program designed to inspire women’s civic engagement and leadership through political and community involvement.
