Meet our New Assistant Dean for Student Affairs - Laura
Green, MD, FACS
Dr. Green brings a distinguished career in medical education, academic leadership, and
surgical training innovation to GW, where she helps support and expand GW’s
commitment to excellence in student development and well-being.
In her new role, Dr. Green serves as an advocate and key point of contact for students,
together with the other Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for the RMC, Dr. Stephanie
Sharps. As part of her responsibilities, Dr. Green is developing programs, activities, and
student enrichment services that support the needs and foster personal growth and
professional development of students in the RMC.
Dr. Green has worked as an ophthalmologist at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore for the past
18 years, and previously served as the ophthalmology residency program director. She
currently serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Development for the Department of
Ophthalmology. She is a nationally recognized leader in medical education. She is
known for her work advancing diversity and inclusion in medicine, innovative surgical
training methods, and graduate medical education reform.
She is the Chair of the Council of Review Committee Chairs at the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) — a position that includes voting roles on
both the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. She previously chaired the
ACGME’s Ophthalmology Review Committee, leading major revisions to national
training requirements, and represents Ophthalmology in the ABMS/ACGME
Competency-Based Medical Education forum. She is also is a Trustee-at-Large of the
American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Originally from Oakton, Virginia, Dr. Green earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular
biology from the College of William and Mary and her medical degree from Vanderbilt
University School of Medicine. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the at
Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and a fellowship in
cornea and external disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
