Introducing our 2020 Women of Discovery, Featuring Lifetime Achievement Recipient: Dr. Sylvia Earle
| |
We are proud to announce that Dr. Sylvia Earle will receive the 2020 Women of Discovery Lifetime Achievement Award at our Awards Gala on Wednesday, May 13th, at Tribeca 360 in New York City. A pioneering oceanographer and explorer, Dr. Earle has been dubbed "Her Deepness" by the New York Times and The New Yorker, a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress, and the first "Hero for the Planet" by Time Magazine. The first woman to serve as chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1990, she continues to break barriers, explore underwater habitats, and be a leading voice for the world’s oceans.
Dr. Earle's current work revolves around Mission Blue, her organization that focuses on the legal protection and conservation of our oceans through public education and the development of a global network of marine protected areas. These "Hope Spots" are intended to safeguard the living systems that provide the underpinnings of global processes, from maintaining biodiversity and yielding basic life support services to providing stability and resiliency in response to accelerating climate change. Under Dr. Earle’s leadership, Mission Blue has designated 125 Hope Spots worldwide that "protect and restore the blue heart of the planet."

Under Liz’s leadership as president and CEO, Deep Ocean Exploration and Research (DOER) has grown to a full-service engineering solutions company that designs and builds subsea robotic and manned systems for a variety of applications, including deep-ocean exploration and critical infrastructure inspection.
Liz and DOER have taken part in numerous projects relating to coastal restoration and public access in the San Francisco Bay Area, including water and wastewater management, the capture of marine plastics, and the Wild Oyster Project, which focuses on restoring native oysters to the bay to improve water quality and shoreline integrity.

Dr. Diva Amon will receive the Sea Award. Diva is a Trinidadian deep-sea biologist who has traveled the world exploring previously unknown ocean habitats from Antarctica to the Mariana Trench. Diva has ventured 1.6 miles below the ocean surface, taken part in more than 15 research expeditions, and discovered six deep-sea species.
Diva regularly gives media interviews and public talks about the need to effectively manage and protect the deep ocean from the human impacts of mining, pollution and climate change. She is a leader in several organizations, including her non-profit, Speseas, and Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI), advocating for marine science, education and responsible practices.

Thank You For Your SupportThank you for supporting women on the forefront of change and history. Because of your generosity, three WINGS Flag Carriers spent the first month of the new decade in the field conducting important original research that will become WINGS Flag Carrier Reports on their return. Breaking the “ice ceiling,” Flag Carrier Sunniva Sorby, with co-explorer Hilde Falun Strom, represents the first all-female team to overwinter in the High Arctic of Svalbard. They are gathering data on rapid climate change escalation. Read Sunniva’s latest blog here.
