I think the thing I like most about assembling each Wednesday's Talk of Texas newsletter is curating the "News From Across Texas" links a few swipes down — visiting various NPR member stations across the state and seeing what's happening there. There's a lot of developing news there this morning after last night's primary elections, which I encourage you to check out!
As for the statewide races, we've also got the latest on them on our site, including Bo French's apparent win in a squeaker of a Republican primary. The presumptive Railroad Commissioner candidate has a history of antisemitic and racist remarks.
We'll be unpacking all the results on today's show with some familiar voices, including the Texas Newsroom's Blaise Gainey, the New York Times' Lauren McGaughy, Rice University poli-sci professor Mark Jones and Texas Tribune D.C. correspondent Gabby Birenbaum. Tune in or listen on demand later!

SPOTLIGHT ON: RED RIVER COUNTY |
|
|
|
The Talk of Texas is running down the state’s entire 254 counties – Anderson to Zavala – with points of interest pulled from the Texas Standard archives.

River run: In far northeast Texas along the Oklahoma border, Red River County is a rural county anchored by the historic town of Clarksville. Agriculture still drives much of the local economy, but county leaders have also pushed tourism, historic preservation and infrastructure upgrades as population growth remains slow but steady.
Head above water: Like many rural Texas counties, Red River County faces the challenge of balancing economic development with aging infrastructure and declining rural populations. Recent investments in water systems and local development efforts reflect broader attempts to stabilize and modernize the county while preserving its historic identity.
One last thing: Visitors can explore the restored downtown square in Clarksville, stop by the Red River County Jail Museum or trace early Texas history through sites tied to frontier settlement and Civil War-era Texas. The county also hosts plenty of community fairs, rodeos and seasonal festivals throughout the year.

“I think voting means that I care. I care about how my communities run, how my cities run, and it matters for the quality of my life and other people’s lives.” |
Voting is typically associated with politics and civil engagement, but a new study finds evidence that voting helps older people live longer.
