The Seton Hall College of Nursing Newsletter - Spring 2023 |
As most of you are aware, after more than eight incredible years serving as the Dean of the College of Nursing, the time has come for me to step down and pursue new opportunities. As I prepare for my last day on June 2, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our remarkable journey together and express my deepest gratitude.
Throughout my tenure, I have been privileged to witness the transformative power of education and the unwavering dedication of our community. Together, we have achieved numerous milestones that have propelled our College of Nursing to new heights of excellence. The passion and commitment exhibited by each one of you have been instrumental in shaping our success.
Together, we transitioned to the Interprofessional Health Sciences campus in 2018, forging a path towards a truly integrated approach to healthcare education. This pivotal move set the stage for groundbreaking collaborations and paved the way for our students to receive a comprehensive education that prepares them to address the complexities of modern healthcare.
One of the most remarkable accomplishments we achieved during this time was the substantial increase in our B.S.N. pass rates on the NCLEX licensing exam. Through your dedication and hard work, we witnessed a remarkable surge in the pass rates, exemplifying our commitment to producing highly competent and skilled nursing professionals. This achievement not only reflects positively on our College but also on each individual who has contributed to this remarkable transformation.
I am proud to say that our collective efforts have not gone unnoticed. The national recognition we have received is a testament to the caliber of education we provide. In recent years, our College of Nursing has soared up the U.S. News & World Report rankings, securing a place among the top 7 percent of undergraduate nursing programs nationwide and earning the esteemed title of New Jersey's premier nursing program. Moreover, our online graduate nursing programs have consistently ranked at the top in New Jersey and among the best Catholic universities in the country.
Our accomplishments extend beyond rankings and statistics. We have addressed the rising mental health concerns by developing a pioneering psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner program. By equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate care to those in need, we have taken meaningful strides towards making a lasting impact on individuals and communities.
In addition, we collaboratively created an undergraduate Honors synthesis practicum whereby our graduating seniors work one to one with a practicing nurse in Pediatric Intensive Care Units, Emergency Departments, Oncology and Intensive Care Units. Working with our hospital partners we expanded dedicated education units (DEUs) where our undergraduate students work in collaboration with the unit nurses and the CON faculty to provide expanded clinical experiences. Through a RWJF grant, we were able to incorporate the social determinants of health into our curricula and clinical experiences so our students are prepared to holistically provide care to the population.
As I bid farewell to Seton Hall University, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. It has been an honor and privilege to lead such a remarkable community of students, faculty, and alumni. Your unwavering commitment to excellence, compassion, and the pursuit of knowledge has left an indelible mark on the College of Nursing, and I am confident that the legacy we have built together will continue to flourish in the years to come.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the students who inspire us with their thirst for knowledge, the faculty who tirelessly impart wisdom and mentorship, and the alumni who serve as shining examples of the impact our education can have on the world. Our shared achievements would not have been possible without your exceptional contributions.
While my time as Dean may be coming to an end, my belief in the transformative power of nursing education remains unwavering. I am confident that under the guidance of a new leader, the College of Nursing will continue to flourish and push the boundaries of excellence.
Please remember that the bonds we have formed during my tenure extend beyond my departure. As alumni, your continued support and engagement are vital in shaping the future of our College. I urge you to stay connected, share your successes, and inspire the next generation of nursing professionals.
Thank you once again for an incredible journey filled with growth, achievements, and lasting memories. It has been an honor to serve as your Dean, and I am forever grateful for the trust you have placed in me. May your path be filled with boundless opportunities, and may you continue to make a difference in the lives of those you touch.

With deepest gratitude and warmest regards,
Dean Marie Foley, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.L.
