Strengthening Statewide Partnerships
This fall, Chancellor Plowman and leaders from the Chancellor's Cabinet, the Division of Diversity and Engagement, Division of Student Success, and Division of Enrollment Management conducted a Mid-South Tour. The team traveled to Memphis to engage in listening sessions, build strategic relationships, and connect with key businesses, educational leaders, government, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and other community-based organizations in Memphis/West Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Congratulations 2021 Community Engagement Academy Graduates
The 2021 Community Engagement Academy cohort delivered their final presentations to the campus at a closing ceremony on October 26. During the 6-week intensive, scholars participated in opportunities to learn and apply fundamentals of community engagement and engaged scholarship. This month, over 30 faculty, staff and students volunteered at A Safety City Christmas. Safety City is an outreach program of the Knoxville Police Department and provides early education programming for area elementary schools. Thank you to everyone who volunteered!

40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
You are invited to participate in the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on January 17, 2022. Registration and line-up will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Chilhowee Park, 3300 E. Magnolia Avenue. Step-off is at 10:00 a.m. Sign-up here by January 7 to participate. UT will provide a small bus for participants with limited mobility. UT to host MLK Luncheon, Symposium January 13
For the first time, in collaboration with Knoxville’s MLK Commission, UT will host the city-wide MLK symposium and luncheon on campus on January 13. The luncheon features Nona Jones as keynote speaker and is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Office, Division of Diversity and Engagement, and Division of Student Life. Annual MLK Celebration to take place January 26
| |
Bakari Sellers, CNN Political Analyst and former Representative from South Carolina, will join the celebration as keynote speaker. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. inside the Alumni Memorial Building in Cox Auditorium.

UTK to Host Frederick Douglass Day on February 14
| |
Frederick Douglass was born enslaved in Maryland. He later escaped and moved to the north. He was a writer, speaker, and activist. He never knew his birthdate but chose to celebrate it each year on February 14. A group led by Mary Church Terrell declared February 14 as “Douglass Day,” a day to honor Frederick’s legacy and memory. On Douglass Day, collections of Black history and culture are transcribed. The Division of Diversity and Engagement will be co-sponsoring events to honor Frederick Douglass. View a list of events at UTK to celebrate Douglass Day. Clarence Brown Theatre Creates Performances for All
| |
Five years ago, UT’s Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) embarked on an effort to ramp up its community engagement activities. “Theatre is about community,” said Tom Cervone, managing director of CBT. “Throughout our history, community has been our driving force, and we continue to expand thoughtful engagement with the greater Knoxville area every year.”

Writing Center Program Assists Seniors with College Applications

UT’s Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center recently launched a program to assist Austin-East Magnet High School seniors with their college application essays. The program received support from the Division of Diversity and Engagement and Office of Community Engagement and Outreach. Read more about the program here.

UT Honors Brenda Lewis Peel
| |
In 1964, Brenda Lewis Peel made history by becoming the first African American to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee. Her efforts during her days on Rocky Top and in her career as a guidance counselor created a domino effect that still benefits students today. In November, a galleria on the second floor of Hodges Library was dedicated in her honor. Read more about her legacy.

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences recently unveiled the space for their Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (CEHHS DEI) in the Bailey Education Complex. The open house was held on Friday, November 12.

Oral History Project Documents Wildfire Impacts
| |
UT Libraries has published an oral history project covering the Chimney Tops 2 Wildfires in partnership with the City of Gatlinburg and the Anna Porter Public Library in Gatlinburg. Rising from the Ashes has collected nearly 140 audio and video interviews with individuals who were impacted by or involved in the wildfires.

Alliance for Better Nonprofits and United Way Merge for Greater Impact
The Alliance for Better Nonprofits (ABN) and United Way of Greater Knoxville (UWGK) announced the merger of their two organizations. This merger will allow UWGK and ABN to collaboratively organize resources and information to help nonprofits raise money and serve their communities more effectively. Both UWGK and ABN are committed to increasing nonprofit capacity and efficiency, creating a stronger and more sustainable nonprofit sector that will work to address our region’s most critical issues and benefit our community members in need.

Extension Launches Live Healthy, Work Healthy
UT Extension agents from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and their program partners have launched a wellness program called Live Healthy, Work Healthy. The program will provide Tennesseans an opportunity to learn important skills to improve their well-being by becoming an active manager of their health.
