The Silverlining to Virtual Instruction: Caroline's Story

Caroline
Caroline (right) and Nebiye were happy to reunite after vaccinations early this year.
Like most of our tutor-student pairs, Caroline and Nebiye were forced to transition to online learning last year. Instead of seeing it as a challenge, they discovered it allowed for more opportunities to build a deeper connection.
“Seeing my student on a screen gives me a window into her world and has allowed me to meet her family, learn what she’s cooking, and see the plants she’s growing on her windowsill,” says Caroline.
Thanks to the support of our donors, LVCA was able to help make sure pairs like Caroline and Nebiye could continue tutoring despite the obstacles virtual learning placed on everyone.
“It’s a privilege to help others become part of our community through literacy,” says Caroline. “I’m always struck by what my students have gone through in order to live here and by how hard they work to become part of our community.”

Online New Tutor Training Continues in July/August

While the world continues to open up, we've decided to keep our New Tutor Training online through the fall. The typical, all-day Saturday training is split into three, 2-hour sessions on Zoom. The training covers the basics of lesson planning, working with adult learners, teaching strategies, and using online video platforms for tutoring.
After completing training, volunteers can decide if they'd like to tutor their students in-person, virtually, or using a mixture of both methods.
Our next training session will begin on July 29.
  • Thursdays, 6:00–8:00 p.m.
  • July 29, August 5, and August 12

Bittersweet Goodbyes; Open Positon at LVCA

This month, we say goodbye to Jenn and Heather as they embark on new career paths. We wish them both the best and are grateful for their years of service to our organization.
We are now looking for a Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to join our team. This person will help us recruit and retain the over 150 volunteers we need each year to run our tutoring program successfully. A significant part of this job is creatively sharing the impact our services have on our students, volunteers, and community through print media, web and social media, radio, television, video, and personal appearances.
Please help us spread the word and find the perfect candidate. More information can be found at literacyforall.org/jobs.
