New plan for the university's future
New plan for the university's future
To Our Campus Community:

Today we begin a new era for our University of Missouri-Kansas City.

We are excited to share with you the results of our year-long UMKC Forward process. It has been an opportunity for us as a community to reimagine UMKC, to envision an innovative and financially sustainable future for ourselves in which students, faculty and staff thrive in an environment of excellence and growth.

If you were not able to attend the rollout meeting today, please view our announcement video.

Three key takeaways for all of us:

1. Five key strategic areas - Student Success, Faculty Development, Research Excellence, Career Expansion and Community Engagement - will drive us to future success and we will invest more than $50 million to $60 million over the next five years in those initiatives plus an additional $5 million in new tenure and tenure-track faculty over the next three years.

2. A significant new vision for our academic structure. Starting in Fall 2022, we will have a total of 10 academic units, including three new ones that will play to our strengths in learning and research: the School of Science, Engineering and Technology; the School of Education and Applied Behavioral Sciences; and the School of Arts, Culture and Social Sciences.

3. No call for large-scale layoffs or reductions in staffing. At the same time, we will be creating new career development opportunities for our staff, who play such an important role in building our future.

Two of several UMKC Forward signature programs:

Professional Mobility Escalators™ will be a unique system of personalized supports and services to propel students from their academic studies to good-paying careers. The Escalators program will be open to all admitted students and is built on research and best practice to ensure that UMKC can grow retention, graduation and post-graduation outcomes for students from all backgrounds and experiences, including underrepresented, first-generation and Pell-eligible students.
