END-OF- SEMESTER REMINDERS FOR OFF-CAMPUS RESIDENTS

Dear Off-Campus Student, 
As the semester ends we know that some of you will be moving out of your off-campus residence or thinking about sub-leasing your residence over the break. Below you'll find some helpful tips for navigating this process successfully and tips if your residence will remain vacant over the break. Get some rest and have a safe summer!

Moving Out: Bulk Trash Disposal


If you are graduating or moving out of your apartment please remember to check with your landlord or apartment building about bulk trash. For those of you who live in townhouses, please contact the Citywide Call Center at
(202) 737­-4404 or 311 to make arrangements for bulk trash collection.

Here is the District’s website for bulk trash collection policies: http://dpw.dc.gov/service/bulk­trash­collection .

You can also place requests online here by selecting “Residential Bulk Collection”. Please use this service request type to schedule pick up of up to 7 bulk items, such as household furniture, appliances, water heaters, mattresses, bed frames, and tree limbs. Prohibited Items include hazardous materials, construction debris, and tires. These items should be disposed of at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station which is located at 4900 John F. McCormack Road, N.E.

Put your bulk items out no earlier than 6:30 pm the day before and no later than 6 am on the day they are scheduled to be collected. Place them where your trash and recycling are collected. Let your neighbors know it's bulk trash by writing a note with the items stating the date of scheduled pick­up and the confirmation #. You could receive a sanitation violation ticket if these items are in the public space at any time other than your collection appointment. Remember, no more than seven items will be collected per appointment.
Donating Furniture and Other Household Items

Many charitable organizations in the area accept donations of furniture, electronics, and other household items that are in good condition. If you would like to donate items, please check out Charity Choices to find a list of local organizations that you can contact. You may also use the Message Boards on GW's Off-Campus housing website to donate or sell furniture to other GW students.

Tips for Leaving Town

If you are leaving for the break, remember to think about the following: 
  • Put at least one light on a timer 
  • Turn off water 
  • Unplug small appliances and electronics
  • Dispose of food that could go bad and seal any open containers
  • Take out the trash 
  • Lock all doors and windows

Subleasing Your Apartment


While subletting is allowed under D.C. law, you must be aware of any restrictions or conditions stated in the original lease or rental agreement. Tenants who violate the terms of their rental agreement may be subject to eviction. Likewise, if you are taking over a sublet, carefully read the terms of the original lease to make sure that the renter is not violating the terms of the agreement by renting to you, or you could find yourself without a place to live.

Trash and Recycling Collection


  • The Department of Public Works (“DPW”) provides regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection to single family homes and small, multifamily buildings in the District. Check the website (http://dpw.dc.gov) for the day of collection in your neighborhood.

  • All trash items should be bagged and placed inside a container in order to be picked up. Only bags filled with grass clippings and leaves are allowed outside of the containers. Failure to do so will result in an increase of nuisance animals’ presence.

  • Place trash and recycling containers out for collection no earlier than 6:30pm the night before collection and no later than 6am on your collection day. Residents are required to remove trash and recycling containers from public space by 8pm on your collection day.

  • Between collection dates, trash cans should be stored on your individual property and not out on the sidewalk or in an alleyway. Failure to comply with any of these items may result in a fine against you.
