Recently, three fourth grade students led our Tuesday gathering on the topic of what it means to be a Hockadaisy. Amy Spence ’87, Hockaday’s Director of Alumnae Relations, shared Hockaday’s history and what an alumna of Hockaday is. Additionally, several Lower School faculty and staff, who are also Hockaday alumnae, shared their experiences as Hockaday students. This gathering was a fun way for our students to learn how Hockaday is one big family!
This past Tuesday, we launched the fifth year of our Lower School Boarder Buddies program- a partnership between Lower School homeroom classes and our new freshman and sophomore residence students. To help our new residence students feel more connected with the entire community and for our Lower School students to feel more connected to the residence department, each homeroom class or grade level will “adopt” a boarder for the entire year. Throughout the year, each homeroom will also do special things for their boarder like making cards, baking treats on her birthday, or a visiting her room in the residence department.
In other Lower School happenings, the Prekindergarten students enjoyed a visiting a pumpkin patch on their first field trip of the year, and all first-grade classes have visited Operation Kindness to read to the dogs. The attention the dogs receive helps to relieve their stress. Finally, next Friday, the fourth graders will host their annual book sale. Gently-used books, CDs, and DVDs will be sold for $.25 each, along with raffle tickets for a chance to win special gift baskets. The fourth grade students look forward to this leadership opportunity every year.
