Meet Robert Malachowski Jr., ACE, '86 Emmy award winning picture editor. Based in Los Angeles with his wife Laurann, Robert’s 35-year career spans iconic shows like The Voice, Survivor, and Stargate. He credits his Brebeuf Jesuit education, particularly his Contemporary Thought class, with shaping his critical thinking and creative approach to life and work

Favorite class while at Brebeuf Jesuit?
“Contemporary Thought” with Mr. Pierle. While my other classes provided a firm educational foundation, this class and the provocative reading list challenged me to construct my intellectual framework. It didn’t take long for that framework to fail under scrutiny and experience, but the class also gave me the tools to creatively and logically rebuild. This class broke the mold of the classic regurgitation of facts and figures in exchange for creative and nuanced original thinking.

Favorite teacher/coach?

Choosing one seems a disservice and I feel that I did manage to take pieces of several teachers with me when I left Brebeuf. My tops were Mr. Pierle, Mr. Hicks, Mrs. Hyatt, and Ms. Compton.

What was inspiring about him/her?

Mr. Pierle inspired boundless creative thought. Mr. Hicks taught me how to channel and express myself. Mrs. Hyatt gave me the appreciation for others’ expressions. Ms. Compton made sure my creativity was balanced with logic
and reasoning.

What are you doing now?

I am celebrating my first Emmy win after five nominations as a picture editor living in Los Angeles with my bride Laurann of twenty-eight years. I currently serve as a governor of the Picture Editors Peer Group at the Television Academy, and I sit on the Internship Committee and Blue Ribbon Panels of America Cinema Editors. For the past twenty-plus years, I have focused on the unscripted show genre while also having edited and produced two feature-length independent films. Laurann works in private medical insurance and breeds and shows our AKC Grand Champion Chow Chows.

How did Brebeuf Jesuit help shape you into the person you are today?

When my father and I took our fall road trip during my senior year to visit colleges along the East Coast, I had a very strong idea of what I wanted to go to college for and what I wanted to do with my life. It was not the path my father had wanted nor the path he thought best for me. I would be walking through unexplored territory without the wisdom and guidance of my parents who had been there before. To be clear: I had my parents’ complete support, but they were not sure how to help me walk this new path.

My years at Brebeuf prepared me exactly for that by creating a foundation within me of individual thought, personal responsibility, and self-reliance. I saw a lot of freedom when I entered college that was nearly overwhelming. A lot of that freedom, especially that of time, was the downfall for a lot of my friends in my freshman year. The open future laid before college freshmen with the repercussions of poor decisions not being actualized for years, or worse, indecision that freezes all development, is daunting. By closely imitating the schedule, and the extracurricular clubs, and emphasizing the personal responsibility for one’s future, Brebeuf prepared me to handle college life. The success of my admittance interview to my final days at Ithaca College all came from my four years at Brebeuf.

Clear memories of high school days fall to the side as years provide distance, but the reflex actions created by those core memories remain. Day to day, I still draw on those core elements learned all those years ago at Brebeuf.

Words of wisdom or advice to our current students.

Avail yourself of the time to play and explore, not to vacation but to find your passion. Don’t limit yourself or your future for anything other than what you want. Every failure teaches more than any success. Creativity starts when you lose a zero from the end of your budget. For every lock there is a key.

A Memorable Fall at Brebeuf Jesuit!

This fall, we had an unforgettable season of events that brought our alumni community together in meaningful ways! From the energy of the Homecoming Tailgate to the cherished Class Reunions for the classes of 1974, 1979, 1993, and 2004, it was a time of celebration and connection. The Braves Open Golf Outing was a hole-in-one success, while the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Reception honored the remarkable achievements of our alumni. Our Career Fair was a great opportunity for current students to connect with our talented alumni network, and the Mass of Remembrance allowed us to honor those we've lost with reflection and gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made this fall so special! We are proud to see our Brebeuf community thriving and can’t wait to continue the tradition of bringing alumni together in the years ahead.

Mock Election

On November 5, over 650 students, faculty, and staff cast their ballot for the Mock Election. This was an amazing opportunity for students to get real-world experience in civic engagement!

Katherine "Kitty" Noga, daughter of Kelly Ivcevich Noga ‘88, Awarded The Barbara S. Wynne Junior Sportsmanship Award

The Barbara S. Wynne Junior Sportsmanship Award is given to a junior girl for a high degree of sportsmanship, playing ability, and mental attitude. This year's winner is Brebeuf Jesuit junior, Katherine "Kitty" Noga, nominated by her coach, Karl Krauter. The award is given fo a high degree of sportsmanship, playing ability, and mental attitude.

Way to go, Brebeuf Rowers!

Earlier this month, Brebeuf Rowers closed out the fall rowing season at one of the world's largest regattas, Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Brebeuf students had impressive results, with senior Sophia Meier receiving a bronze medal (out of 95 boats) in the women's 4 and senior Jack Foltz and junior Kayden Coddens finishing in 4th place (out of 86 boats) in the men's quad. Coddens and Foltz also had a strong finish of 5th place (out of 96 boats) in the men's double, and Meier finished 5th (out of 60 boats) in the women's 8. Many of Brebeuf's 14 rowers also achieved personal best times in their races. We are proud of their hard work!

Also worth noting is Meier's 9th place finish (out of 90 boats) in the women's 4 at the largest regatta in the world, the Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts, which occurred earlier in October.

Brebeuf Rowers train and compete under the umbrella of the Indianapolis Rowing Center. The spring rowing season will start in March 2025, and a learn-to-row program will be available for all high school students. Please click here for more details.
