Turn It and Turn It Again: Renewing Our Torah Journey

“If you love learning, keep learning! If Torah feels enriching and life-giving to you, keep making space for it in your week-to-week or day-to-day.” — Rabbi Shani Rosenbaum
To celebrate the beginning of another year of Jewish learning and community, Hebrew College will host the free, online event Turn It and Turn It Again: Renewing Our Torah Journey on Thursday, October 20. “On Sukkot, we leave our warm houses (and somehow October in Boston is already cold and windy) for the insecurity of a sukkah—a three walled structure open to the elements that we can see the stars through. In these booths, we sanctify the day by declaring it, 'the time of our happiness.' At the same time, we read the book of Kohelet—the Book of Ecclesiastes—and its famous declaration that there is nothing new under the sun and that all is but transient breath...”

Why did I choose to write on this particular parashah? As I read it again, I find myself struggling with several passages in this portion. Perhaps struggle is appropriate during the Ten Days of Teshuvah (Return, Remorse, and Renewal), this season of soul-searching (heshbon-nefesh), which calls the Jewish community to grapple with the fullness of life, including its challenges. And as a Presbyterian pastor, taking on Ha’azinu affords me the opportunity to do a mitzvah of sorts, by giving my rabbinical friends and colleagues some breathing room, as they prepare their Yom Kippur services and sermons, while still recovering from the many hours of tefillah (prayer) leadership over Rosh Hashanah!

“And for That, I Thank Hebrew College”: Ellen Kaner Bresnick and William Bresnick on the Living Legacy Society
“Hebrew College made my life very complete and interesting: career-wise, personally, emotionally, spiritually. I knew I wanted to be part of their Living Legacy Society to ensure the institution’s future. This is very important to me,” said Ellen Kaner Bresnick, a member of the Hebrew College Living Legacy Society. "Whatever amount people are able to give is as important as any other amount…It is such a privilege to be able to pay it forward.”
