Undergrad Tolmas Scholars Start Research Positions
|
Twenty-seven undergraduate students started research positions this semester, working with faculty mentors throughout the College of Sciences. As Tolmas Scholars, these students will gain hands-on experience working on research projects, advance their laboratory skills and have the opportunity to present their work at InnovateUNO.

Dr. Kelly Boyle, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, runs the Laboratory of Fish Morphology and Behavior at UNO where he studies the role of sound on the evolution and ecology of teleost fishes. His research seeks to better understand how and why fish produce sounds for acoustic communication.
Dr. Boyle recently published “Diel patterns of depth use and swimming activity of post-release greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) in the northern Gulf of Mexico” in Environmental Biology of Fishes (December 2022).

Two graduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences traveled to Austin, Texas to present their research at the January 2023 conference of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology. Bennett Price gave a talk titled “Red drum calling behavior interactions with vessel noise at Panama City Beach, FL, U.S.A”. Adam Quade presented a poster titled “Fluctuations in floodplain hydrology and connectivity elicit topological shifts in fish schools”.

Adam Quade, Ph.D. student in the Department of Biological Sciences, also attended the Southern Division American Fisheries Society meeting in Norfolk, Virginia February 1-5, 2023. Adam’s poster "Spatiotemporal Variability in abundance and biomass of Mississippi River floodplain-associated fish species" won Best Poster Runner Up.

Undergraduate student Gabby Sheets is a premedical student at UNO, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Biology and Sociology. In her role as a research assistant and technician in Dr. Fern Tsien’s laboratory in the Department of Genetics at LSUHSC-NO, Gabby and her colleagues at LSUHSC-NO, UNO and the LCMC Children’s Hospital are studying the etiopathology of hearing loss that can occur as a side effect of cancer treatments in children. Her mentor at UNO is Dr. Elliott Beaton in the Department of Psychology. Gabby recently presented this work at the Southern Regional Meeting, February 2-4, 2023 in New Orleans.
