History Lecture with Dr. Andrés Reséndez
Thursday, Feb. 7, 5 - 6:30 p.m., Canyon Theater
Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in the Americas. Yet, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering book, The Other Slavery, the subject of this year’s Athearn Lecture, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. Andrés Reséndez is an award-winning historian and author specializing in colonial Latin America, borderlands, and the Iberian world. His most recent book, The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Slavery in America (2016), won the Bancroft Prize in American History and was a finalist for a National Book Award in Nonfiction.
The History Department at CU Boulder is proud to partner with the Boulder Public Library to present the 30th Athearn Lecture in Western History. Reception and book-signing to follow the talk.

Library Stories
“Thank you so much for helping me with my old family 8 mm films. My 90-year-old parents just moved to Boulder and I had no way of showing the home movies they brought. Thanks to you, our whole family enjoyed two days of movie watching over Thanksgiving. We had three generations, and the children got to see their grandparents and mom [when we were younger]. We all loved it!”   -Patron Susan, on BPL’s cinema programs & services

“The concert was awesome. My daughter went to her usual physical therapy appointment this morning and rocked all of her motor exercises. When her therapist asked what we did differently, the only thing I could think of was the organizing effects of the music.” -JB, a BPL concert series attendee

“This year, in the spirit of the season, and rather than giving individual gifts, we made a charitable donation to the Boulder Public Library. For years, the library has been the center for community and charitable affairs.” Patron Anne, quoting her grandfather’s 2018 holiday letter to friends & family
