The Power of Language
An ARC volunteer posted this thought-provoking story "I clearly remember my vegan mentor telling me a story about a holiday get together with her family." My mentor said, "I was in the other room putting my jacket on the bed and when I came out to the kitchen they had put her on the table and were cutting her body apart..."
"It took me a few moments to realize that she was referencing the turkey. It was so powerful. Language is powerful. Consider assigning gender to our fellow earthlings when speaking. Calling someone 'it' makes it easier to disconnect. 'It' implies an object, to use or own. Try he, she, him, her, ze, zer...anything besides 'it'. People need to be reminded of the victims."
