The Doughertys’ final project, Fit For a King.
|
FINAL STRAW: After forty years of building larger-than-life, whimsical sculptures across the globe, the North Carolina artist Patrick Dougherty and his son—and full-time assistant—Sam are retiring their gigantic stick installations. Even though the works are temporary, sharing the art with strangers is something Dougherty has treasured most, he tells G&G. People have come up to show him joyful photos they took with a sculpture that’s been long gone. “They remember the day they were there, the feelings they had,” Dougherty says. Read about the Doughertys’ final project together, and what’s next for the two artists.
FRUIT OF THE SEA: You know the scene in Forrest Gump where Forrest and Lieutenant Dan have the only working shrimp boat in the wake of Hurricane Carmen and suddenly land a seemingly infinite amount of shrimp? Well, the seafood company that supplied that shrimp just unearthed thirty-year-old receipts showing just how many crustaceans the filmmakers used. It’s a lot of shrimp. Get the backstory of this piece of cinematic history.

A performer with Pensacola Opera.
|
STAR POWER: It takes a lot to lure an award-winning baritone away from New York City. But when Corey McKern first set foot in Pensacola, Florida, and learned that the Gulf Coast city was home to five professional performing arts groups, including the Pensacola Opera, it wasn’t long before he was packing his bags. “The first time I came here, I was driving by the bay, and it was a sunny day and I was rolling past these old charming houses, and I was like, ‘I could live in this place.’” Today McKern works as the opera’s artistic director, bringing in world-class talent to the historic coastal community. Find more about Pensacola’s rich art scene.
