COVID-19 UpdateVaccines have always been about public health. It’s not about you. It’s about us.
The most important thing we can continue to do for ourselves and others, especially children who cannot yet be vaccinated is to get our shot. Let’s keep going Toronto. Our 90% vaccine target is within reach.
Vaccine Opportunities This WeekThe TDSB will continue to help facilitate vaccination opportunities and clinics within our schools, together with local health partners as we have over recent months. This week's clinics are for those born in 2009 and earlier - no appointment is needed.
COVID-19 AdvisoriesCOVID-19 Advisories - This page provides a list of the active confirmed cases and resolved cases of COVID-19 among students and/or staff in TDSB schools. Please note that all schools where there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 will receive a letter from Toronto Public Health (TPH) to inform them about the possible exposure.
- As of November 12 at 10:30 a.m. 5,530 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Ontario's publicly funded schools in the past 14 days. Of those cases, 868 are students, 107 are staff, and five are not identified. Two of the 4,844 schools in the province are currently closed.
- In the TDSB, as of November 12 at 4:15, there were 253 student cases and 38 staff cases with 230 cases resolved. No schools were closed.
Update on the Implementation of the Mandatory Staff Vaccination ProcedureThe TDSB continues to connect with staff who are not in compliance with the TDSB’s COVID-19 Vaccination Procedure while focusing on service continuity.
This week, a small number of staff completed their attestation, allowing them to return to work. Messages were sent out to Principals and Executive Officers providing them the list of staff who, as of November 22 would be placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave of absence without pay. Based on any potential absences, they have been asked to identify any pressure points so we can prepare and support them where necessary. Letters have again been sent out to impacted staff, including those who have not attested, to encourage them to comply with the procedure, and to inform them of the consequence for non-compliance. We will continue to support our students, staff and communities as we implement this procedure.
Below, is the TDSB staff disclosure data as of 4:30 p.m., November 11, 2021

Team Toronto Kids COVID-19 vaccination plan released for five to 11 year-olds
"Today, Mayor John Tory and Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, announced the Team Toronto five to 11 year-olds vaccination plan readying the City for the expected approval and delivery of the vaccine for this age group later this month. For more than six weeks, Toronto Public Health and Team Toronto partners have been preparing to vaccinate this population. The plan outlined today is needs-based, data-driven, and equity-focused which will provide access to COVID-19 vaccinations to more than 200,000 eligible five to 11 year-olds living in Toronto.
Team Toronto will place every available resource into a multi-pronged clinic delivery model once the vaccine is approved and delivered by the province. This model includes large fixed-site clinics – including the five City-run immunization clinics – school-based clinics, hospital and community-based clinics, more than 450 pharmacies and a number of pediatric and family physician practices.
Through a needs-based and equity data analysis, Toronto Public Health has identified 30 neighbourhoods for the first roll-out of the school-based clinics. The analysis included COVID-19 case rate during wave four of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination rates in the 12 to 17 year-old population as a proxy for anticipated vaccine uptake in five to 11 year olds. The analysis also included the percentage of residents in each neighbourhood who fall below the low income measure, the proportion of racialized individuals, and the percentage of people living in crowded housing...
To further support the vaccination uptake, Team Toronto continues to host a number of education sessions, webinars, and town halls for parents and guardians, newcomers, physicians, community agencies and ambassadors. These educational opportunities are augmented by hospital COVID-19 vaccination telephone consultation services. Team Toronto will continue to add additional parent and caregiver town halls as well as targeted multilingual and neighbourhood-based telephone town halls in the coming weeks.
In order to increase awareness, the plan will be supported by a comprehensive advertising campaign including out of home, print, broadcast, digital and social media in multiple languages. The campaign will use refreshed, kid-friendly creative aimed at parents and caregivers of children 5 to 11 years, connecting them to more information at toronto.ca/covid19 and encouraging vaccine uptake in this cohort.
Team Toronto’s vaccination campaign is a city-wide partnership between Toronto Public Health, the City of Toronto, local school boards, Toronto hospitals, Ontario Health Teams (OHTs), local health care organizations, more than 155 Community organizations, family health teams, pediatricians, pharmacies and social service providers..."
Note: All indication is approval is weeks away. It can't come soon enough!

Requests for Switching Between Learning Models
When all TDSB students completed a Selection Form for in-person or virtual learning for the 2021-22 school year, we communicated that there would be one opportunity to switch between in-person and virtual learning in February 2022.
In order to plan ahead for students to switch between in-person and virtual learning for February 2022, families and students requesting a change must complete the Switch Form. Families and students who do not wish to make a change do not need to complete a form. While we cannot guarantee that all requests for a switch can be met, it is our goal to accommodate as many as possible based on available programs and space (e.g. French Immersion, Extended French, Specialized Programs, Alternative Schools, other limited circumstances).
- Elementary - The Switch Form for elementary students will be open between November 26 to December 3. Families and students who do not wish to make a change do not need to complete a form. Classes will reflect changes due to switches beginning on February 22, 2022.
- Secondary - We are waiting for data from the secondary student check-in survey and the secondary teacher ThoughtExchange to inform plans for Semester 2. Details will be shared with families and students so they can make an informed decision regarding switch requests. Semester 2 classes will reflect changes due to switches beginning on February 3, 2022.
Please note we supported the Ontario Public School Boards' request to the Ministry of Education "On behalf of our member boards, we know the time is right to ask for the Ministry of Education, as soon as possible, to permit school boards to make a local decision regarding a return to a normal semestered calendar, with regular cohorts, more normal timetabling, and increased options for vaccinated student participation in extracurriculars and sports."
To date there has been no response. However, Toronto Public Health told us that they could only support the Ministry decision if we reach our goal of 90% of all eligible are fully vaccinated. For the sake of our students and staff, please get vaccinated.

Destreaming Grade 9 Courses for the 2022-23 School Year
Thursday, the Ministry of Education shared with school boards that beginning September 2022, all Grade 9 subjects will be offered in one stream, including science, English, Canadian geography and French as a second language. The memo provided boards with the course codes and descriptions to be used in course registration processes and materials for the 2022-23 school year.
As part of our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, the TDSB has supported the majority of Grade 9 and 10 students to study academic-level courses for a number of years. The Ministry also noted it will be releasing an addendum for the Grade 10 math courses to support the transition from de-streamed math to current math courses. At this time, Locally Developed Compulsory Credit course policy remains unchanged.
Sincere appreciation to all TDSB teachers and research staff who have been supporting this decision for our students in our schools for a number of years.

TDSB Winter Clothing Drive - Updated
Clarification - Please note this drive is for cash donations or in-kind new clothing.
One in every three children lives in poverty right here in our city and too many children come to school without proper clothing to keep them warm during the winter months. In addition, many TDSB students are new to Canada and this may be their first time experiencing a Canadian winter.
Our need for winter outerwear is greater this year. Canada is welcoming newcomer families from Afghanistan and the TDSB is welcoming many of these newly arrived students into our schools. The newcomer students are adjusting to their first Canadian winter and can benefit from your generous support. The students need proper winter outerwear such as coats, boots, mitts and hats to be able to attend school. This year’s Winter Clothing Drive will run from October 2021 to the end of February 2022. Donations are accepted.
We will also accept new winter outwear items. Due to potential health & safety, hygiene, sorting and storage limitations, the TDSB can only accept new clothing items. Tax receipts are available for these donations. Contact the Business Development department at BusinessDevelopment@tdsb.on.ca for more information about how to donate new outwear items. 100% of all proceeds and in-kind donations go to benefit our students.

Respect the Rules - No Dogs Allowed on School Grounds
Dogs are not allowed on school property at any time. Many people are surprised to learn that City of Toronto By-Laws and TDSB Policy prohibit dogs (leashed or unleashed) being on school property.
Please respect children’s play spaces. And please do not verbally abuse TDSB caretaking staff - I am hearing that when caretakers onsite try and inform dog owners, they are met with threats and intimidation.
