It’s March and for many people that brings about images of spring, green, and St. Patrick’s Day.  While there is a long history to St. Patrick’s Day, what this traditional Irish holiday has become in America is a day of the color green, a reason to go out and drink and revel (if we needed one), or even green beer.  We’ve done the same with Cinco de Mayo.  I thought in honor of this “tradition” I’d mention a few books involving alcohol that you might find interesting, enlightening, or at least fun.
The first is The Complete Beer Course: Boot Camp for Beer Geeks: From Novice to Expert in Twelve Tasting Classes by Joshua Bernstein.  Bernstein takes you on a fun, flavorful tour through the world of craft beers.  In a twelve-part course, he demystifies beer, and teaches you to choose from and enjoy the vast array of singular brews available today.
The second book is From Vines to Wines: The Complete Guide to Growing Grapes & Making Your Own Wine by Jeff Cox.  If you’ve ever had a dream of owning a vineyard, Cox gives you everything you need to know to make your dream come true.
The Road to Burgundy: The Unlikely Story of an American Making Wine and a New Life in France by Ray Walker gives a wonderful memoir about someone who did make that viniculture fantasy become a reality.  Even if you’re not a big wine drinker the setting in Burgundy is still worth taking a look at this book.
Liquid Intelligence: The Art and the Science of the Perfect Cocktail by Dave Arnold is the scientific guide to making the perfect cocktail and a fascinating look at a modern mixologist.
Amy Stewart is a wonderful writer and her book The Drunken Botanist: The Plants that Create the World’s Great Drinks is a fascinating tale of the plants, and man’s use of said plants, to create new and better alcohol.  So, if you’re interested in history, botany or libations this might be the book for you.
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a more recent book called Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum, and the Cult of Tiki by Martin Cate.  The tiki bar of the past is making a return and even if you’ve never been, or have been and never, ever want to go again, this book is a fun look at everything tiki and the fun, escapism that it represents.
